I bought a used bike with S works Gripton tubeless tyres on it. My word, they are picking up punctures almost every other ride! Luckily the sealant has sorted them all but today picked up a bigger hole and sealant was spewing out all pver the bike, clothes, pedestrians etc. Anyone else had this problem? Old bike has Mavic Ypsilon UST tyres that seem far more robust. Anyway, am thinking of changing for Hutchinson Fusion 5 eleven storm. Anyone running these? They have good reviews for being puncture proof as well as offering decent pace

Cheers for now

If you want pace, you won’t get puncture protection as well. If you want puncture prevention, you won’t get pacey tyres. During the winter months, I use either Schwalbe Durano plus ( clinchers with tubes ) with Stans Race sealant ( not the standard version ) in the tubes. These are very dead feeling, and hellishly draggy, but it’s nearly impossible to puncture them. I’ve also got one bike on Hutchinson equinox, also clinchers, also sealant filled tubes. These are livelier than the D+, but not summer tyre pacey. My third option is a set of Mavic wheels with Tannus Aither 25 mm airless tyres on. These take a certain amount of getting used to, but during the darkest, coldest, wettest rides, I’ll put up with the ‘odd’ feel ( which you do get used to ) because they can’t puncture. I ditched all the tubeless tyres I had in my road bikes, because they were an absolute liability. I tried Yksion Pro UST, and Continental GP5000 TL, they were an absolute load of old crap, and we’re cut to ribbons inside 300 miles, and 200 miles respectively. I do ride on some properly atrocious surfaces, and a lot of miles when it’s either raining, or has been raining hard, so it’s nigh on impossible to avoid any pointy crap, even if you can see where it is, due to hiding in puddles.

If the bike is used, then how used are the tyres? No point writing them off as useless and puncture prone if they’re a few 1000km gone and near the end of their life!

When commuting I always found that when I started getting punctures it was because the tyre was worn.

Thanks for the replies. I know i wont get the ultimate combo but was surprised how cut up they were getting.

Good point on how used they are. Bike had over 1000 miles use when bought and i’ve put around 1500 on it since June so i guess they are quite well worn. Either way, I think I’m going to change them. A mate runs Hutchinson’s and rides the same routes I do and has had no issues so they are looking favourites at the moment.

I appreciate the comments/input

Cheers
