What is this bike part?

What is this? I’ve had one in my box of bits for a while and yesterday we think another identical one fell off my wife’s bike. I can’t see anywhere it is supposed to go? I thought it mghit have been a shipping piece, but bike is 5 years old now?

Looks like packaging to me. Does your bike have big chunky wheel nuts by any chance? Maybe this was some kind of derailleur protector.

That's the weird thing, no! I can't find any nuts that it would fit on. The fact her bike is 5 years old too would seem unlikely it had stated on there that long.

It certainly looks like some kind of plug to go in a hole and fit a weird shape...
