Due to a couple of recent additions and the fact I'm regularly commuting by bike & the kids have been treated to new MTB's its time I need to look at some bike insurance to look after us should somebody light fingered take a liking to one or more.

I'm probably looking at £11.5k across 9 bikes, purchase price of the most expensive being £3.5k and typically no more than £3.5k's worth out the house at the same time... BikMo is the cheapest I've found at £40/month. Is there better (and/or) cheaper out there?

I'm looking around at the moment and Laka are coming out the best option.

Recently purchased a new bike and my home insurance company wouldn’t cover it - they only cover bikes up to £3000...

I ended up using Bikmo - and when my home insurance came up for renewal I moved my other bikes across - the total cost is £350 to cover about £10K of bikes, includes travel / damage in use and some medical cover...

Sounds expensive but my home insurance cost was reduced but nearly £200 by removing my other 2 bikes from the policy.

Pedalcover here. I’ve just renewed house insurance (buildings and contents) with bike cover up to £9k.

Premium was £360 including excess cover too.

I looked at Laka and Bikmo. Both wanted £250 for £5ks worth of bikes, so essentially b&c plus excess cover for £110!

Sorry to hijack this thread bit for those using Bikmo (like me) what lock do you use when out and about? A quick scan of their approved locks suggested they were all too baulky for carrying about (for road biking at least) and any other lock means no payout if it gets nicked.

Laka make a similar stipulation, Sold Secure Gold Lock is the minimum accepted when away from home. (They start at c£100).

Looks like Bikmo then, having just renewed home insurance otherwise Pedalcover might be worth a look.

You can pick up gold rated locks for a lot less (e.g Kryptonite Kryptolok for £28 on Amazon, or an Oxford OF160 chain for £35 on eBay).

Yes, they are heavy. I leave one at the destination (office cycle storage) and have a spare I stick in a rucksack for the rare occasions I leave a bike anywhere else.

I’m sure you can, I just clicked on the link on the Laka website which gave the price I indicated...

Thanks for the replies. Will take a look but post above confirmed what I thought - that I’m not going to find an approved lock I can put in a jersey pocket. So theft part of insurance policy isn’t valid for me. (Original plan had been to put tho on house policy for when at home and just get a bike policy for liability and accidents etc but couldn’t find any like that.)

Those premiums are absolutely nuts - more than you'd pay for a 200mph 17K motorbike!

I've got Aviva home insurance with "extra" cover and two Ebikes were £40 (they base the premium on the most expensive (£3100)), theft, third party cover, all over the world.

I have Halifax home insurance which provides £10k total cover for bikes comprising up to £5k per named bike and £500 for any un-named bikes. They are insured at home or outside the home provided they are securely locked to something. It excludes racing though, so if you need race cover you'd need a specific policy.

My premium was £249 with £50 cashback so £199, that's buildings, contents and cycle cover.

Interesting... and it looks like you've saved me some money. I'm also with Aviva and I recall that when I took the policy out that adding the cycles sent the price through the roof so I didn't bother. However just got a quote to add them and it's less for a year than Bikmo want for a month!

Our house insurance is also with Aviva and it covers bikes up to £10k away from the home.

If you have the "extra" cover it covers them all over the world too. I've just been on a euro-tour and took the two eBikes with us on a towbar mounted carrier and all was fine with them there too. I went through everything with the lady on the phone just to check they were properly covered.

I had my old yeti 575 covered for 5k under our AXA home insurance.

Just had an accident on it, which broke the frame. They paid out no quibble the full amount.

Just looking at this currently for peace of mind.

Those who have gone through home insurance, are you racing your bikes?

That seems to be the sticking point. I’m currently looking at just under £60 p/m for two bikes with PedalSure. (£12,100 of bike replacement cover)

Other companies were similar or way more.

No.

I ended up using Pedalsure to cover racing.
