Shimano BR-MT400 upgrade?

My 2019 Fathom has Shimano BR-MT400 brakes front and rear. I've never been amazed by them on day one. I did the L2B ride on the weekend, which was the toughest I've put it through and the brakes (aside from me) were woeful. Couldn't lock a rear going downhill, no feel, no bite, no power, horrid.

MT400 doesn't mean much to do me; where are these pitched in terms of group set level? My bike has SLX stuff on it, which is fantastic, but these brakes... I'm happy to spend some money on something better. Where should I be looked? I've got 180/160 discs.

Cheap and nasty level. SLX brakes would match your groupset and be a massive improvement.
