Lately I have been thinking about the bikes I had as a child. Mom was a single parent with not much money. My first was a Halfords called a Mayflower and at 5 yrs old in 1972 I thought I was the bees knees. I quickly became known for daring stunts over homemade ramps and broke 3 frames which were replaced by Halfords. I then suffered the indignity of a couple of girls shopping bikes with baskets both ends. I now realise my hard up mum bought these supposedly for me but really for her to ride to shifts at Kidderminster carpet factories.
It was then I realised I could build my own and like others made what with hindsight were the precursors of the first MTBs. These were made from bits the bin men would give us.
I then saved and got a Raleigh Ti racing bike in red with 12 gears!
In 1991/2 I purchased a Scott Ultimate CST full suspension bike which cost £1500.00! It looked like it came from another planet. Shortly after I purchased a Kirk Revolution with the injection moulded magnesium alloy frame. It was the strangest looking modern bike.
What weird bicycles have you owned?
