Sram NX 12 speed rear mech
Discussion
Hi, bought a new mtb last year a Nukeproof Mega, was hoping to have a year of trouble free riding but the rear mech seems to have different ideas. The problem is one of the jockey wheels keeps on dropping out, the first time I took it back to place of purchase after about a 100kms, they would not warranty it as they said it could have been knocked or anything but they managed to put it together with new wheels and bolts. The second time it happened around 300kms took it to a local bike shop (not where I bought it) and they said it would need a new rear mech which they fitted, and it’s done it again after about another 100kms. Any ideas what could be causing this? I’m absolutely sick of it and have no faith in the bike anymore.
You aren’t the only one with issues with nx mechs

Checked the reviews on chain Reaction Cycles last night and it appears to be a common problem, yet when the lbs rang sram yesterday when I dropped the bike off he said that they said they were unaware of any issues.
So it appears that the threads are given up in the plate, so I wonder if there’s any fix as I can’t be affording £130 every 150kms

SRAM warranty isn't what it used to be now Fisher and Zyro have merged. So it appears that the threads are given up in the plate, so I wonder if there’s any fix as I can’t be affording £130 every 150kms
I'd be upgrading to a GX mech; they're £84 from CRC. Mine last one was three years old when I replaced it (it was replaced because I bent it in a crash).

I've been looking at a few bikes with the NX mech. Should I look elsewhere?
ETA Norco Fluid, Trek Roscoe, Scott Scale etc.
from the reviews i've seen you'd be better off finding a GX or Shimano equipped bike, or buy the NX bike and budget for a GX mech upgradeETA Norco Fluid, Trek Roscoe, Scott Scale etc.

I've been looking at getting something in the sales and the NX seems to be default on many bikes at that level.
Its probably a fair point that there are a massive number of bikes around with NX now, so the bad reviews should be taken in that context.
I suspect many NX-equipped bikes are more likely to be owned by beginner/intermediate riders too (compared with advanced/expert riders being more likely to invest in more expensive bikes), so may get abused more/not be maintained as well and reveal weaknesses more often because of that. But I could be wrong on that.
This thread makes me a little smug about having GX instead though, even if I didn't know the difference when I got it! (X01 owners can laugh at me now).
If I was buying now NX wouldn't put me off, but I'd take it into account when thinking about value. And if it did break and need replacing I might spend a bit more to replace with GX instead.

Do you think that the GX is a better option?
Has anyone heard of sram have addressed the problem with the NX
From personal experience, I’ve had no issues with my GX stuff. Has anyone heard of sram have addressed the problem with the NX
A riding friend has been using NX stuff for the last 18 months or so with no issue.
Popping in a GX mech is probable the best way forward. A move to Shimano will be relatively expensive because they’re not cross compatible. I’m also not a fan of Shimano 11/12 speed stuff.
I had the exact same problem with my NX. The top pulley wheel dropped out on a trail and when inspected the threads we're buggered. Amazingly I found all the parts and it's holding together for now but I don't think it'll last long. I'll probably push for a warranty replacement or upgrade to GX.
And no, it definitely wasn't anything to do with my amateur riding.

Mr Gravelben, so you think it’s us amateurs why the mechs are falling to bits?
Didn't mean you in particular at all (I'm extremely amateur myself so not making any suggestions there!), I was just wondering if it might be a factor with problems in general being more common in the big picture.Edited by GravelBen on Saturday 24th August 13:26
