Hi,

So we are off to centre parcs with our 16 month old daughter next month and want to take our bikes. I've never used a bike carrier before so looking for advice on what to buy ?

The family wagon - Lexus 450H does not have a tow bar or roof rails but could be persuaded to fit if that's best.

Thanks

G

Your car is on my list of potential replacements for my Accord Tourer. I have seen plenty advertised with a tow bar with accompanying comments that "only used for cycle carrier". I imagine the economy would be dreadful with bikes on the roof, however, a Thule 3 bike carrier on a tow bar would be shielded nicely behind the car.

What economy do you get by the way?

Edit - Change from body part to car part.

I have roof bars and Thule bike carriers on our VW Tiguan and went to London this weekend with 4 bikes on top. Horrible wind noise, pain to get them on top as vehicle is high and never felt that safe, plus had to take them all off to enter the car park. I normally only use this method for short journeys.

For your high vehicle get a tow bar and bike carrier. I've had a Thule one which was brilliant and now using a Atera tow bar bike rack as it is the only one I can load the bike on and still open the bar doors of our campervan. It is much easier to fit the bikes on, more secure, less wind noise, safer and no difference in vehicle height.

Thanks all, very helpful

I've ordered a westfalia detachable towbar, and 7 pin OE electrics which are on a 2 week lead time from germany. So i'm going down that path. Now to decide on which carrier

Alawson - I get around mid thirties now I have got into the habit of how to drive a hybrid, I really recommend one, the build quality is superb.
