How do. I’d been looking into getting a Wattbike Atom. They are £1650 delivered and seem to be a cracking bit of kit. However, I’ve found a place that’s selling reconditioned Wattbike Pro’s for £1000.

Obvious risk is getting a reconditioned bike that’s been used 8 hours a day in the gym for the last god know how long.

Anyone have any thoughts?

The wattbike pro and the wattbike atom are very different things

What are you going to use it for?

I used to have my turbo trainer (Elite Muin) permanently rigged up in the garage. I don't have that luxury anymore and as anyone knows, its less appealing if you need to rig it up each time. I train with power, use the turbo and I've been on the wattbike pro at the gym. It's much nicer/easier to have something rigged up permanently at home to jump on & off whenever is convenient. Also would be handy for the Mrs to use now and then and a wattbike/static trainer is much better for two people to use as its a QR seat reposition and you're away.

I dont use Zwift and dont really plan to.

£1650 for an Atom looks like good value, a mate paid over £2k for his when they first appeared. He rates it highly and uses it with Zwift. A Pro is a different proposition, I had one for 5/6 years and found it to be a great tool. I’ve since joined the smart trainer posse and find it a better way (...for me) to spend an hour or so on a turbo.

£1000 for a recon Pro sounds ok, I sold mine for slightly more than that 18months ago (and it had the older Model A computer). They hold up pretty well providing they’ve been looked after, wiped down etc as they can rust and look grotty.

Atom - very much designed for use with interactive apps such as Zwift and Sufferfest et al. Magnetic resistance. I have one and in my experience the overall robustness isn't quite the same as the WB Trainer or WB Pro. Great bit of kit though.

WB Trainer / Pro. More of a standalone machine, although with some trickery I understand you can now use Zwift et al or a Garmin to some degree for planned workouts. Flywheel based - think the Concept 2 rower of the cycling world and you're not far off.

If you aren't using it with Zwift (or similar) then I think the Pro will do a good job.

The atom is much more of a 'consumer' product and the extra money it would cost you over and above the reconditioned pro is paying for things you aren't going to use (connectivity, 'gear change').

If you think you will ever use it with something like Zwift, or that you would want to use "smart trainer" functionality (I wouldn't be without that now personally), then the atom is probably a better solution

Check out the comparison chart and, if you can, have a go on each before you decide
