I'm finding my clipless pedal / shoe system more and more of an annoyance and wish to return to the old school pedal and toe clip/straps system. Thing is .. what to buy ?

Bike is an ageing (approx 10 year old) Focus Mares with Ultegra of that period.

Is there only one thread standard for pedals ?

Anything to watch out for / get caught out with ?

Basically I want to wear my trainers for cycling so I don't look like an arse walking around when off the bike.

why not ride spd pedals and a trainer style / mtb shoe with cleats?

Because I don't like the twist action to get out, the fumbling to get in (oo er) .. it's annoying me.

I just want to slide my foot in, slide it out .. like I used to do in the good old days. These ultegra pedals are nowhere near as nice to use as my old Time pedals either .. and I'm 52 and not a racer .. I just want to get back to something easy to use, and that I can get off my bike and walk around in easily.

Trainers / toe clips ticks my boxes now, I was just looking for some info on which options people like.

This is probably the start of me going down the retro bike route anyway .. I'm finding the current set up not really age appropriate any more hehe

I use toe clips on MTB and spds on road, I use MTB spds on winter bike so it’s easy to walk in the shoes as the spds are recessed.
Loads of pedals at Wiggle take your pick, if you are riding in trainers you may want a wider pedal but you can get shoes that look just like trainers but are stiffer Five10 for example

Sjscycles.co.uk probably have a better choice of that sort of thing than Wiggle and the like.

Almost all pedals are standard 9/16” thread, 1/2” is usually used on BMXs.

MKS pedals are quite nice, have a look for them, the BM7s look ideal

Just take care with your choice of trainers to wear with clips/straps. Too deep a tread and you might get them stuck dragging them backwards out of the clips, with predictable results. And too wide a sole can be a beggar too, as the sole presses the strap against the crank arm and wears it thin, resulting in regular replacements. Not trying to put you off, just noting a couple of (easily avoided) potential drawbacks from my own experience. I stuck with clip/strap pedals for a long time, just out of habit more than anything, but I've not looked back since the chap who sold me my first "modern" road bike did me a deal on Shimano shoes and Look Delta cleats/pedals. I'm after a decent set of clip/strap pedals again, though, for if/when I complete the restoration of a nice old Reynolds 753 steel frame my brother gave me...

...I'm pretty sure that "used properly" the old-school clips and straps should be worn with a specific cycling shoe with a cleat of sorts that is meant to prevent your foot unintentionally sliding backward out of the clips with the straps tightened down. It's just that most people these days using clips and straps don't tighten them down, for the sake of a swift exit from the pedal when required, and the old-school cycling shoes are much harder to find than the pedals, clips, and straps.
