Removing link from Shimano HG40 chain

I'm sure I've removed links from chains before, but I'm struggling with this one. I can push a pin out with the chain tool but seemingly not far enough to separate the two links - is that what I'm supposed to be doing? If I push the pin through, the side of the link nearest me unhooks, but the other side of both links are still connected to the pin on the far side.

Do I just hit it with a hammer?

And once I've got the link out, do I need a quick-link to join the chain back together again, or can I push an existing pin back through the new end links?
