Or help me find something else!

Background, I was introduced to the delights of road cycling a couple of years ago following attempts at off-road riding which I hated. Road riding is for me.

I'm not a racer, 5ft 11" with 31" inside leg, approx 15st 9lb. My riding tends to be 2-4 hours, up to 45 miles, although I have done a handful of 100km fundraisers quite comfortably. Time seems to be the limiting factor rather than distance. My usual average speed is 13-14.5mph depending where I'm riding. I live in East Yorkshire so I usually head up into the Yorkshire Wolds with a couple of pals.

I'm currently riding a Giant Defy 4 in XL size which I now know is too big for me. I've had a couple of rides on a mates L size Cube Attain, which felt better size wise.

So, here's where I'm at. I have set a nominal budget of c£2k for a new road bike with accessories, new Nav, pedals, helmet etc. I reckon c£350 for these. The rest for the bike.

I love the look of this Merida, https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Merida-Reacto-Disc-6000-2... but I think it will be too aggressive and is just too much £.

I also like these two but am not sure what the differences would be to me at my level?

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Merida-Reacto-Disc-5000-2...

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Go to a shop and see if you can test ride one? The internet isn't really going to help yo on bike fit. The white Merida looks pretty good to me. I would certainly want Discs on any new road bike.

Do consider a 2nd hand bike, you can get some cracking deals on Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree etc. Obviously finding the right bike in the right size can be a challenge though.

Or he could just walk into a shop hand over some money and walk back out with a bike and be out riding on it next day. Alternatively he can trawl all the usual outlets. Maybe get in a car for a few hours to go a view something that isn't accurately described and then waste some more time driving back home and having a Burger King on the way back.

OK, great you have found your bike. Now to get it back to your house and then you discover that it needs some work done in the shape of a service. That could be £90 plus what ever consumables it needs. Off to the bike shop you go again. Nice little trip for you.

Yes there are some bargains to be had, but make sure you are fully aware of the time and faff and involved.

True there is hassle and some risk. If you want a bike "this week" or aren't willing/able to service your own bike then no, don't buy second hand. If they are, then £2k would buy a decent brand bike with Ultegra Di2 disc, or mechanical Dura Ace.

You liked the Cube Attain - have a look at the SL with 105 groupset and hydraulic brakes, £1300.

Mrs PB has a Merida Scutura 4000 - impressive bit of kit for the money, and she loves it which is a bonus!

Carbon frame, full hydraulic discs, 105 kit throughout and was about 25% cheaper than the usual suspects, such as Giant, Trek and Specialized. I think Merida also make their own frames - something like the second biggest frame maker?

We did get a proper frame fitting to make sure the size was right, and also took it for a spin to confirm.

Worth keeping on your list and going for a test ride.

Merida is the world’s biggest bike manufacturer and can therefore produce very well priced products.

My brother and I recently rented a pair of Sculturas with Ultegra and 105 components while in Spain and thought they were very good for the sort of money they will sell for. They were stiff, smooth riding and overall well designed. The geometry was fairly upright too so probably suitable for the OP.

Thanks for the assistance so far, I appreciate I can get a good used bike for the money, but I like the idea of a perfectly set up new one.

Does anybody understand the differences between the two white ones I linked earlier, is one more aggressive?

I'm thinking the Scultura is more endurance and the Reacto race?

Located in Yorkshire so you should be able to pop in for a fitting. Usually give a discount on accessories when you buy a bike.
Some of the stuff they sell is cheap crap, but they are very good value on some of the bikes.

Correct. Also bear in mind that the Reacto has a 52/36 chain set compared to 50/34 which will make life harder up steep hills, and the ride quality may not be a good as is often the case with aero style frames. The Reacto is more suitable for a rider who’s primary concern is with speed, and perhaps also with having a fashionable bike!

I have Reacto 5000 in white. Like it a lot and it looks beautiful. I also find it very comfortable.

If I was buying from new it would be between the Reacto 5000 or Giant Propel Pro 2 - both for around £1700, looking amazing. Giant seems to have better wheel, otherwise there doesn't seem to be much in it.
Oh yes they are both "aero" bikes

Anyway whetever you like and fit, go for it.

My understanding is that Merida own 49% of Specialized and the bikes come out of the same factories.

Think of Merida as Skoda to Specialized's Audi (yes I know that Audis and Skodas aren't made in the same factories but I hope you see what I mean).

You get a good spec for your money but don't pay a premium for the brand.

I would also:

A) check if you have access to a Cycle to Work scheme to keep the cost down, there are plenty of schemes where you can spend over the £1k limit (and you just top it up), and,

B) don't forget 2020 kit is arriving, so loads of things are starting to get priced down. Look on the Wiggle and Chain Reaction sites for starters, in about 6-8 weeks (mid to end kids summer hols) they will have 50% off a fair few bikes, with limited supply and bargains can be had if you move quickly.

The 105 7000 series groupset was new last year and pricey, which is annoying, as it's taken many bikes with it out of the C2W range. The groupset is now reasonably priced which should filter through to prices next year I'd hope.

I see the OP liked the Attain... I am a similar build; and bought a 2018 GTC Disc race about 6 weeks ago.
(Mainly) Ultegra Groupset, carbon frame and hydraulic disc brakes. I paid £1400 (RSP £1800) for mine which I thought was a great deal. I am also really pleased with it- comfortable yet pretty rapid.
However, just found this offer- https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/1400/products/cube-a...
that's a hell of a lot of bike for £1.15k!

Haven't they closed their shops now?

I'd be wanting Discs too, although otherwise that looks quite nice.

Agree with buying from a shop, and getting a fit with it.
