Planning a solo unsupported LEJOG next year, subject to approval from the wife. I want to do a 7 dayer (probably in September). Rather than pick the shortest possible route I want a good scenic route and will put in a decent stint each day. I have cycled for years, cycle to work each day and next May will be doing IM lanza so will already have a few 100 milers under my belt before I think about proper training for this. Undecided on camping vs B&Bs.

Biggest decision I have seen from reading is the A30 out of Devon and Cornwall or not. The argument seems to be if you want to do it fast, its a must. Versus, its horrid avoid like the plague.

Anyone got any comments. How bad is it? Is it worth sucking it up and doing that to get the first stint over with then swapping to a more scenic route there after? I have done 1000s of miles on roads am not scared but I do get frustrated by close passing and tts in cars so worry this is going to put me in a bad mood from the off.

It's pretty grim in places through Cornwall, I'd look at using as much of the 'old a30' as I could.

Someone with better knowledge of alternatives through Devon can comment on that part, but it's a very fast dual carriageway all the way through.

Personally I’d avoid it. Did a 7 day Jogle a few years ago and we went on it from Okehampton to Penzance. We had a car behind us with hazards, signage etc and it was still terrifying. Recently drove the same road and thought we were total idiots to have ridden it.

Pop into here mate for some decent advice.. as you know the A30 is a bit of a touchy subject for us cyclists. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole but plenty will.

The camping V B&B issue you mention is worth a look at. I did Spain to the UK fully loaded, so camping / panniers etc in 10 days. I was knocking out daft mileages towards the end (140 miles a day) as could just camp in a wood or when I chose However I had the weight penalty of panniers / tent etc.

Thanks all, I can see planning the route is going to be harder than cycling the fker.
