Evening,

I started cycling just over a year ago, buying a Boardman Team Carbon on a salary sacrifice scheme. I've really enjoyed it and have done around 3000 miles on it so far. The predictable has happened and I now find myself wanting a new bike. Why? Mostly because I just do and I think I have proven this isn't a passing fad. Despite it being a decent bike, it is entry level and I'd like disc brakes and Di2's.

Most of my riding is with mates with any from from 15 mile after work blasts to 60-70 mile weekend rides and the odd sportives. I want to do more and have a few things in the diary later this year.

I'm late 40's and think that an endurance type is the best bet. I have narrowed it to a used Trek Domane SLR, a Specialized Roubaix or a new Canyon Endurance. Budget is £3000 max. I saw a used Trek the other day and it was scruffy for a year old bike. Rode nicely though and I like the idea of the Isospeed stuff and the Futureshock on the Roubaix.

I would keep the Boardman as a winter as don't think it's worth much.

Any comments on my three choices?

Cheers

I loved my Roubaix, I'm younger but it still preferred it still as effortless at soaking up the miles compared to an out and out race bike.

Evans have got last years on offer at the moment (in limited stock/sizes). You don't get the new hydraulic head tube of 2019 but it's still a good spring system.

ah I've just noticed it's only ultegra or an extra 900 for Dura-Ace

What put you off another boardman? The new stuff is well received

Nothing specifically but if I’m being honest, i fancy a different brand. No doubt this sounds shallow....plus the suspension stuff on Roubaix and Domane sounds a good idea

Spesh had a recall on the Roubaix shock and TBH I would avoid anything new/novel having been burned with a Cannondale Lefty MTB a couple of decades ago smile

Absolutely and completely seriously

Pragmatically as stated in another thread I ride road and CX and gravel as well as MTB and on a drop bar bike Ive yet to feel the need to buy into needy maintenance and the potential for a random steerer snap for a bit of extra comfort

I havent heard any horror stories about Trek however their suspension appears a lot less complex and radical

At the 3k price point youd be getting a lot of Canyon, and who doesnt like a shiny new bike??
Di2, sub 8kg and very tasty wheels work for me

But obvs its your decision......

Cheers, and Im jealous!

Thanks all, I read about the recall and they seemed to have refined the future shock system. I agree that Trek seems simpler. Having just battered around Wiltshire’s finest back roads, some form of cushioning would be welcomed! I am trying really hard not to rush into something but you know what is blokes are like!

Think will go to the pub to ponder!

I’ve just had the same dilemma and went Canyon, purely as a previous poster has said, for £3k it’s a lot of bike. The Trek was 1500 more but wheels and bars were carbon, but not height on my priority list.

By all accounts, the Canyon can take 32c tyres. Mine will be here in 3 weeks and if you haven’t made your mind up by then, I’ll happily give my opinion on it. If your around Bedfordshire area, you’ll be welcome to try it out.

I’m on my second Roubaix after replacing my 3 year old one with a 2018 Roubaix Comp in March. Rutland cycles were discounting them to make room for this years models. It’s my third Specialized road bike after starting out on the Secteur which was the aluminium framed, carbon forked version of the Roubaix. I’m very pleased with it. It’s a massive jump up from from the old one and a lot smoother and faster. I’m no professional by any means but even I can tell the difference in the way it rides.

Thanks, first hand experiences are always the best. I’m in Wiltshire but thanks for the offer!

What I have established is that all three choices would be very good, so probably as much about how each of them feels. I did see a very nice one year old Domane SLR with a great spec for a smidge over £3000 which is tempting me at the moment....

Check out Rutland cycles as I think they still have some offers on on the Roubaix.

They're proper cheap... tempting. I started out on a Sectuer back in 2012, and still my favourite bike really.

Hi, slight update on this. I went to see a year old Trek which rode well but was a bit beaten up for a new-ish bike. I have another one in mind, another Domane SLR which I'm about to pull the trigger on, subject to a viewing. It's a smaller frame (52cm) which will suit my short arse 5'7" height. It's well specced with Ultegra Di2 and was a custom build. Looks good too!

I've been melting my brain with geometry charts to compare the Trek with my Boardman and I think that due to the stack on the Domane being c.25 mm higher than my Boardman this will give me a more relaxed riding position. Reach is almost the same on both bikes. Have I got this right?

I did think about a new Roubaix Pro from the links posted here (thanks by the way) but they'd sold out in my size and I really fancy the electronic shifting too.

cheers for now

Chap, just read in the times that they are going to extend the cycle to work scheme to include unlimited cost on the bike so your budget would now qualify if you want new?

I have a Domane 5.9 and to be honest, it's frikin awesome. smile

Truly comfortable and still fast and stiff where it matters.

Run mine on hand built wheels and 25mm tyres.
