Mrs Vex want to change the riding position of her bike which means I need to raise the handlebars to reduce the ‘stoop’ as it were.

I was into bikes 18 years ago and still ride my Gary Fisher Sugar2 from that era. So around the same time I bought her a GF Tassajara GS and this is the bike I need to modify.

However almost 20years on, I know I need to change the handlebar stem, but is it as simple as just ordering one or do I need to check any measurements to ensure a correct fit?

I think the easiest route first is stem, then if she needs more I could change hablebars to give even more rise.

Thanks

V.

Threadless Headset? Whack on a riser.

Oh, cool. That looks an ideal solution.

Shows how out of touch I am!

Will research tomorrow.

What is wrong with the riser option?

Look, they're not made of depleted uranium. They commonly weigh about 200g.

They have their place.

Be aware that you may have to recable the front brake if the handlebar is raised beyond the length of the brake housing.

I thought the reason might have been something along the lines of it not being recommended/good practice to have a lot of steerer tube above the top headset bearing, as this upsets the handling of the bike?

Nah, shortening the stem might make things a bit funky but an extender won’t really be noticeable handling-wise.
