My missus is keen on getting an e-bike for pottering around on
I'd quite like an eMTB

My cunning plan is to get an eMTB that would be OK for me to do some trails, and for her to use on road. The electric power should easily make up for the inefficiency of wider tyres and heavier weight on the road.

Only trouble is that she is 5'4" and i'm 5'10". Is the height difference between us too big to get one bike to do it all? Wishful thinking maybe

good plan. That will work nicely.

I would look at one with 27.5 wheels, maybe in M.

My wife has the Cannondale Moterra 3 in a medium she is same height as your wife and manages fine, with the seat up I can ride reasonable but I am 6' 3".

I also have a Turbo Levo in a large with a dropper post, with the seat down my wife easily rides mine but it would be to big for her on the trails.

Forest fire tracks, roads and canal toe paths not an issue.

A friend of ours has same bike as me but in a medium size and that would be ideal for your heights in my opinion. 2017 or 18 models though as they are 27.5 rather than the current 29"

We've just been through exactly the same process. Other half is about 5'6", I'm about 5'11". Bike will be used for me to commute on and other half to use on rides with the family / holidays / days out etc.

My advice would be for you to both go to a large bike shop that has a number of bikes in stock / on display and both to try them out for sizing. There is a vast difference between bikes from different manufacturers and even within their own ranges.

We ended up with a Specialised Levo HT Womens version in a large size. It was the only one that fitted us both comfortably (it might be womens model, but it looks identical to many of the other specialised bikes but it's bright purple! - I'm colour blind, so don't really care that I'm riding a purple bike). If the bike was much bigger it would have been too big for the other half, much smaller and it would have been too small for me! We even tried out the mens version, Medium was too small for me, Large was too big for her!
