Any suggestions for well padded shorts that actually have the padding far back enough to save on arse related discomfort?

You have to try and see what fits you personally.

Louis garneau fit me perfectly for example but Madison and endura are supremely uncomfortable

Whereas Endura for me are super comfortable as are Shutt Velo Rapide.

The more you spend doesn’t make them more comfortable, have a pair of Btwin bin shorts that are perfectly fine for up to 2 hours and we’re like a decent coffee and cake stop for two price.

Are you sure it is down to the shorts?

9 times out of 10, it is the saddle and your position on the bike that makes the most difference

the padding in the shorts is the icing on the cake, nothing more

Thanks for the info, it feels with my current pair that all the padding is forward of where it needs to be, regardless of seat position.

I have little more to add, for me Assos, this was after a few different brands over the years.

In regards to JPJPJP and saddle. Do you feel it's the correct width, and are your sit bones on the bits they should be?

I find the DHB Classic bib shorts are perfect for me. It seems it's a very personal thing.

Put them on back to front?

are they bib shorts or non bib ones? I've a pair of non bib DHB tights on which the pad seems to move forwards while i ride. The same item with a bib stays in the correct place all ride.

OP, I’m not sure your shorts are the right way round.

To be honest, it's all dependent on whether or not your arse is used to the saddle. Have you rode enough to break in your arse? I'm wearing bib outfits with lots of padding for the daily commute but, in the early days, it still wasn't enough to get over the pain. I even bought a saddle with the middle bit cut out but my arse still ached. I remember the early days of rides home when, at the start, I had that feeling that I was gonna puke due to the pain.

This time round, and after 2100 miles of Mon-Fri rides since Nov 2018, I can get on the saddle wearing just jeans (with pants underneath) and not feel a darn thing. Obviously, I don't ride like that to work but recently I've put on the Shimano MTB shoes (with cleats) and rode the few miles to Morrisons to get some Magners cider - no issues whatsoever arse-wise.

If you're not already using them, move to bib-shorts. Everything stays in place better and they're generally more comfortable than shorts on account of no waistband.

Rapha and Castelli I've always found to be extremely comfortable. I've got a pair of Garneau and personally I find them pretty unpleasant for a longer ride. Try things on.

Check the reviews on Road.cc

I've got some Decathlon tights which I bought in a hurry. They have a big pad but it's not in the right place and it gets caught on the saddle when I mount the bike.

I've just bought some Polaris bib tights which I bought in a hurry. The pad is smaller but in the right place so big isn't always better, it's the location that counts.

I'm generally a fan of Lusso kit, made for British conditions in Manchester, but I haven't got their shorts. Yet.

Attaquer bib shorts get a nice review on Road.cc except they're a bit pricey. Worth it?

I bought a set of this kit. While I’ve no complains over the chamois the sodding bibs are see through so only got used once before being resigned to the ‘not anymore’ pile.

Castelli, rapha, morvelo and more or less anything mid/upper tier I find all about the same. Suffer saddle sores all season regardless. Should probably try chamois cream!

The other thing may be that you aren’t changing position enough? I get pretty uncomfortable on super casual rides where I don’t get out of the saddle.

Interesting, I have 3 or 4 pairs of Bib Shorts and never had an issue.

I bought some Oakley shorts and jerseys (jawbreaker and colorblock styles) a while ago (they are still on sale in a few places) and have done 4-5 hour rides with zero problems. They are made by Bioracer, so very decent quality. I imagine any current Bioracer stuff is good too.
