New Wavecel vs. MIPS helmets
Discussion
We’ve an arms race to improve helmet safety, now that Bontrager’s launching WaveCel technology to rival MIPS in reducing head injury.
So we’ve a scientific and marketing war about whose scientific claims stack up in terms of injury reduction.
When are we going to get independent testing instead of marketing claims?

Probably never, unless the government decides they need a safety rating as per motorcycle helmets. Even with that system, there’s plenty my head is not going in!
The jury is still out on cycling helmets effectiveness, and even neuro surgeons offer differing opinions.
Bell helmets used to use the slogan “got a 10$ head, wear a 10$ helmet”
Pay or not pay your money and take your chances. A good fit and a trusted brand imho like my motorcycle helmet is what I wear.

Virginia tech have tested the new helmets and they seem to come out with good results, although not hugely better than mips.
Bontrager/trek are presumably going to stop licensing the mips technology so mips stand to lose a big chunk of income.
I gather the new trek lids are a good step in the right direction but possibly not the giant leap the marketing department want us to believe.

The saga continues.
Now we have a PR battle between MIPS and Bontrager, when what we need is independent testing.
However, I’m glad helmet manufacturers are focusing on safety instead of just considering next season’s colours.

I have just replaced my commuting helmet. Previous one was 9 years old and I spent £27 back in 2010 and given that I use it for well over an hour a day, I thought I would go for a helmet with the MIPS. Might as well spend a decent amount of money to protect my head should the worst happen. Went with a Giro Cinder in satin blue and purple. Not as good looking as something like a Kask Mojito, but they don't have the MIPS stamp. However, I'm sure it would still protect my head!
Virginia Tech’s now tested the WaveCell vs. MIPS helmets - an inexpensive MTB MIPS helmet gets the best overall safety rating, but the new Bontrager Specter WaveCell is the best perfuming road helmet. Helmets without either MIPS or WaveCell do worse.
Virginia Tech is independent and the test methods look rigorous.
My next helmet won’t be one the gets a low score!
