Folks, whilst faffing putting hydro brakes on my winter bike I’ve been pondering the upcoming favourable weather and something to add to my Giant TCR by way of an aero bike.

I like the giant product and what you get for your money so the Propel SL has been in my sights but for the same reasons the Canon Aeroad also appeals. I’m looking at spending about £3k or so which seems to get me a nice Dura Ace Di2 bike about 18 months old.

Any thoughts, experiences on the 2 models would be appreciated.

I have a 2015 Propel, although it was £1600 new, so not really comparable to any bike that is £3k secondhand...

I love it, still get moody when I don't get to ride it for a few days. When I was buying, I had a demo of a Propel that was £2.5k, which was by far the best bike I had ever ridden, and caused me a few sleepless nights trying to justify blowing the extra £900.

Comfort on it for me isn't an issue, I spent 27 hours on it doing an Everesting 8 weeks after I got it. I haven't tried an Aeroad, but if you are buying secondhand I would expect the seller to let you have a little go on either, and that should be enough to tell you which you prefer.

I looked into this last year. I had a 2016 Propel & loved it. Next bike I wanted discs, at least Ultegra groupset,an aero bike & I love the look of hidden cables so ideally all internal. I looked at the Trek Madone, Canyon aeroroad, Propel, Venge & even for a bit more dosh the Cannondale system six.

Giant announced the 2019 range of Propels & so the 2018's dropped in price. The Propel pro disc with Di2 Ultegra dropped from £4,700 to £3,500 over night. It ticked all the boxes & it was really hard to justify anything else even if I went to a 5k budget.

I picked it up in December & I have loved every minute of it, covered around 500 miles in the dry & ive been using my 2016 propel for group rides in the wet. I love the Di2. its so precise & great when in the semi auto mode.

How do you get on with the discs, after my winter bike experiences with them, climbing weight etc I’m quite set against them unless I can find some compelling argument to use them

I've had discs for a long time on DH bikes & my cyclocross bike, they are progressive & smooth, theres no difference in braking in the wet or dry unlike rim brakes when theres often a pause from when you pull the lever to slowing down if its wet. However.... when its damp my god to they make a noise, really loud moaning noise for a couple of seconds & then they are silent. Brake again & the noise is there. I've cleaned them & in the dry they are silent but it just seems to be in damp conditions that it happens. Its happened on two damp rides but maybe it will sort it self out in time. You end up trying not to brake as everyone around you jumps & frowns at you. That said its great round town when someone looks like they will step out in front of you.
