Does it really matter for an 8 year old? My daughter is the same age on a Muddy Fox 24” and the quality of gears and brakes really doesn’t matter. She cycles about 10 miles+ a week on all terrain if that’s comparable.

Had the Halfords Wiggins 24 - got it one of the various Hfods offers, was quite a good bike.

Gooutdoors now do a 24 kids bike - wild bikes, looks similar to the vitus.

Fair enough. We’ve had no probs with brakes etc and live in a hilly area too but all kids are different I guess.

Dawes Academy bikes seemed pretty comparative to Frog/Isla etc.. unlike them they seem to be available with some decent discounts.

I ended up buying an old Carrera Detonate for my lad and then spent a load of money specing it up, he wanted a full suss like the guys in the videos he watches. He does make very good use of it though

I bought a 20" Vitus for my daughter. Really impressed with the setup out of the box and the quality of the build and components. Haven't needed to adjust anything either. It's not quite as light as an Islabike but not far off.

My daughter had a Frog which was excellent.

It also sold within minutes for a high percentage of the new price when she outgrew it.

Component spec by the look of it, Forks, Steel rather than alloy, chainset, 7 gears rather than 9 etc and groupset lower in the range etc

Specialised Hotrock 24

We cycle as a group of 6 kids & 3 dads. 4 of the 6 kids have them - good bikes!

CycleSprog website gives good advice. Plenty of decent bikes available below the Islabike price point. My son has a 20" Pinnacle bike (Evans Cycles own brand) and it is noticeably lighter and better made than the Argos cheapies.

For my son's 9th Birthday he got a Frog 69 https://www.frogbikes.com/lightweight-kids-bikes/h...

He absolutely loves it, especially after I chucked some Maxxis tyres on it, as it's mainly used for proper MTB'ing.

I paid £180 for it. It was secondhand and had clearly never been ridden and was in immaculate condition. A bit of patience on Ebay / Gumtree / Facebook can unearth some utter bargains.

A bit off topic but I think unless you go to their MTB range the 69 is as big as you want to go with Frog. Got my daughter a 73 and when you get to that size the geometry isn't great. It was very twitchy a small adult MTB would be better which is what I did for the next daughter.

Hoy Bonaly, kids have got a 20 inch and 24 inch, both great. Very light and good components, they were a cut above everything else we tried when buying them.

One thing I do think is a big benefit to kids is hydraulic disc brakes, especially if they like riding i the rough stuff, probably more so that bike weight. Shame they aren't fitted on the lower spec models more - a basic set of brakes in only £35 and are far better than V brakes for little hands

My son has one of these, been a great bike.

I found it on Ebay for a buy it now price of £15 (I had been bidding and missing others for up to £100)!! Needed a new rear tyre but apart from that it's been great for nearly 2 years now. He's on the verge of outgrowing it but I reckon I can get my money back!

My boy has been riding Ridgeback's from size 14 - 20inch now. Will probably get a 24" version after that. Can usual get quite cheap 2nd hand.

Or how about new Merida:-

My daughter used to ride Cube bikes now rides a Marin (still only on 20") bought new from PaulsCycles. Just picked up a Carerra detonate 24" with disc brakes for £50, plan to upgrade with proper components soon.

I've had a lot of fun doing something along those lines https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Still evolving!

Excellent thanks for that, these Carrera frames are aluminium so seem pretty light.

I've also picked up 2x Carerra Sol's 20" for £20 which I am going to strip, paint and put decent parts on as my two are still a bit small to ride the 24".
