Thinking of ordering one of these for myself:-

https://www.islabikes.co.uk/product/bikes/beinn-29...

I know Islabikes are considered the "Rolls Royce" of children's bikes by some, with excellent resale value and I don't plan to use it that much, but I just fancy one.

Are they so much better than I can get at Halfords or similar for half the price.

(I have been to the factory whilst passing on holiday and was very impressed.)

Hmm. For a £600 flat bar hybrid I would be expecting hydraulic brakes.

I didn't even know bikes had hydraulic brakes...(I've been out of touch with cycling for nearly fifty years, was very keen in my mid teens)

I just like the clean classic lines of the bike, I've never even had disc brakes, just traditional Campagnolo's with brake blocks. smile

If you like it go for it

Looks a decent bike but there are 1000s of decent bikes out there

Worth buying a brand you trust in case you ha e issues

I can see discs in the pic wink

I've bought 3 Islabikes for the kids and think they're great but Beinn were always focused on being lightweight and easy for kids to use.

Weight of these are 11.8kg (BI 29 Small), 12.1kg (29 M) and 12.14kg (29 L) so not that light. SRAM 10 speed groupset.

There are other bikes which are lighter and have a better groupset with more gears (to get up hills) for adults for £600.

Quick google Boardman HYB 8.6 Hybrid Bike - Grey has 18 speed Shimano and weighs 11.5kg at £550.

It had Sram BB5 mechanical discs. Bottom of the market, really. They only have single-sided pad adjustment and are tricky to set up and keep ‘dialled in’. I’ve installed and serviced them and find them finicky.

I should add, however, that the LBS round the corner when I was in Cardiff (top of Cathedral Road), could perform miracles on them and get them perfect...

Hydros are generally miles better, and a must at this price point for a flat bar.

Cheers to all, very helpful.

Plenty of food for thought there. I'm just north of Manchester btw.

Pinnacle Lithium 3 comes in at £445 if you trade in a clunker.

3x8 gears, Tektro hydraulic brakes, possibly a more usable spread of gears, looks a decent enough buy.

My money would go on a Vitus. Full Sora and Shimano hydraulics. 20% off end of year sale.

There's a lot to be said about going to your local half decent bike shop, and having a chat when they're not too busy.

And buying from them. They'll help you with any teething issues, do a shake-down service after a few weeks, and look after you.

Finding the decent one local might be tricky, but someone here will have a recommendation for you.

I have an Islabikes adult bike. Had it for nearly 5 years now. Mine was only 400 pound as they used to come with V brakes.

It is was bought as I was so impressed with the kids bikes and as a commuting bike I think it is great. Just feels perfectly right for me. My wife bought a 600 pound Cannondale Quick at the same time but I know she covets my bike as it really is so much more comfortable, lighter and just damn rideable than hers - the Cannondale is agricultural in comparison.

I think that maybe sometimes a bike is more than the sum of its components.

Agree. My wife's 1x Whyte Hybrid rides much more sweetly than my ostensibly 'superior' Whyte from the same series.

OK, thanks for all the comments and taking the trouble to reply, I'll decide in a month or so when the weather picks up, lots to think about, I do like to support local GOOD bike shops, but still like the look of the Beinn.

Been out of cycling for many years, was very keen as a teenager in the sixties, but want to get back into it.

Good to see cycling seems to be booming the last few years.

I'm also in the market for a new Brompton. smile
