Garmin Edge 520
Discussion
The Mrs has bought me a gps for my mtb rides and I can’t for the life of me work out down to download routes or where best to download them from.
I can see the file where I can drop them in on Garmin connect but can’t download gpx files apart from in internet explorer! It’s doing my head in!
Any help would be appreciated?

Do you have the original Garmin Edge 520 or the newer Garmin Edge 520 Plus ? The original 520 only has a very very basic map installed as it wasn't designed with navigation in mind wheras the 520 plus has a more detailed map and navigation capabilities (you can upgrade the maps on the original 520 but its a bit more complicated to get navigation working).
In terms of installing gpx files - if you have created or have a gpx or tcx file of a route and have it saved on your pc you can install it by plugging the 520 into your pc (it will show up as an external drive with several folders) and then saving the file into the 'newfiles' folder. Then unplug the 520, make sure it is turned off and then turn it on again - the route should now be available on your 520 (under something like courses from memory). When you turn any edge on with a new gpx file in the 'new files' folder the garmin automatically converts it to a 'fit' file and moves it to the 'courses' folder.
If you create a course in garmin connect or 'ridewithgps' you should just be able to save it direct to your device or export it to your pc and then install as above. Ive only tried mapping routes that follow roads so not sure how easy it is to map offload routes.
It can take a while to get familiar with the quirks of garmins but imo its worth persevering as once you've got them sussed they're great devices.
Hope you get it sorted
