My well used Cannondale Alum road bike looks like it needs to be scrapped off. The rear gear selector is built into the front brake lever (Shimano) and having been stored its now seized beyond economic repair.

Getting a new group set and wheels isn't economical either.

Problem is the cassette is 8-speed so getting suitable shifters is a big ask so whilst the mechanic is seeing what can be done I've started looking at whats out there. My 'racing' days are over so comfort over aero is probably the way to go but I still want a kick and speed when I want it.

I've been looking at the bmc road machine 02 three 2018 road bike. Ive been out the scene for a while and don't know the decent makes. Is it any good?

Looks good to me, apart from the butt ugly shifters. 105, disc brakes and carbon. All you'll ever need.

Shimano Claris. Basically farm machinery. Ugly as sin, heavy and clunky. But like Russian technology, works in all weathers and even after 10years buried in a desert.
I had a 3x8 Claris bike once. A fine starter set. But really heavy.

I collected my BMC Roadmachine 02 Two 2018 a couple of days ago, and took it out on one of my usual routes yesterday. First impressions were very good - it had felt good when I rode home from the local Evans, but putting a few miles on it in Richmond Park yesterday confirmed everything I'd been hoping for with it. Still to fully get used to it but It's a very comfortable bike, fast, well built and a very smooth ride.

I hadn't heard of BMC when I started looking at new bikes during the summer, and had been impressed by the build quality (but not the price) when I sat on one of their bikes when I was sizing up a Cannondale. In fact, I was about to order the Cannondale until I saw the BMC's had been added to the clearance sale - so with my son's old bike as a trade-in, it was a pretty big saving over the list price.

The Cannondale is back. The tech has sourced and fitted some Claris shifter/brake levers, nice bar tape and replaced all the cables. All good. Test riding snapped a rear spoke, replaced that but truing pulled another spoke ferrule through the rim. Rim scrapped. Fitted some old aero wheels had a ride.

Unforgiving alum frame with aero wheels at 130psi wasn’t a comfortable ride! Come the spring I’ll be getting something more comfortable.
