A bit of background.... I used to ride a lot in my teens and 20's, then discovered cars, girls and beer, all of which ruined me financially and physically hehe

Got back into riding recently, but don't enjoy it as much as I used to. Possibly something to do with being old and still riding a 90's chromoly rim-brake bike with no suspension.

Anyway, I don't want to spend a fortune in case I don't use it. I do a mixture of road and trails. Not interested in out and out speed on the road and I don't like hybrids, plus I prefer the freedom of an MTB to ride wherever I fancy. Given that my current Scott has lasted 20+ years I've been looking at them again.

This one is now reduced... what do we think for the money? £341 and I can trade my old bike in for another £30 off!

Looks a decent solid bike for the money.

Beware though, IF you do get 'the bug' you will want to be upgrading quickly and that is going to cost you...trust me eek

Sadly not. My wife kindly pointed out that evans cycles accept clubcard vouchers and while I was trying to figure out how to cash them in, they sold out. Gutted. I don't have much budget at the moment with family and house stuff taking priority so still shopping around trying to find something for similar money. Rutland cycles have the 2018 Aspect 950 on sale at £375:

https://www.rutlandcycling.com/bikes/mountain-bike...

But also the 2019 Aspect 770 and 970 both for £399. I am struggling to understand the difference if anyone can help? I've been out of the MTB world for some time, so any guidance would be much appreciated.

If it doesn't have to be a scott other brands offer better value £400ish bikes. Scott are often worse value as have higher overheads than some of the other brands (giant make them, I think). The voodoo from Halfords normally gets best review at that price point.

Doesn't have to be Scott, but it really needs to come from Evans so I can use my clubcard points. This years budget is not looking rosy frown

Any thoughts on this?

Slightly concerned about from 27 speed down to 18, but seems to have reasonable spec, including Shimano Hydraulic discs, tapered headtube and Suntour XCR forks.

Thanks all.

I had a cheap (£450)Scott hardtail a couple of years ago and I hated it. It had a high mass (15kg from memory), basic Suntour fork that struggled on the (comparatively novice) Marin Trail in North Wales and mechanical discs that needed constant adjustment.

They may have improved their entry level hardtails so have a look before you buy.

On the other hand I once had a Scott Genuius full suspension and that was an amazing bike. (but at the other end of the price range)
