Tacx smart trainer - do you have to use the smart side of it

A technophobe friend of mine is considering buying my Tacx Flow Smart
However he really just wants to replace his old non smart trainer as it is kaput
I’m selling it to him fairly cheap so cost isn’t an issue, but i don’t think Zwift etc is for him, he just likes to pedal and watch tv
Is the flow any good for this?
