Dorset and Devon National Cycle Route 2

Has anyone any experience of this route? I have family in Bovey Tracey, which is close to Dartmoor, and might train or drive half way there (I live near Brighton) and then ride. I would be doing the return trip a few days later so looking at 100 miles roughly.

I know the road route, M27 and A35 mainly. There's some lovely scenery in Dorset but the main road is not cycle friendly. I'm wondering how easy to follow the National Cycle Route 2 would be and if it's suitably surfaced for a road bike?

I would adapt the route at certain points, such as through Lyme Regis and staying close to the coast as far as Exmouth to get the little ferry.
