Thinking of renting a bike for the day and pottering around. Ideally want to get somewhere not easily accessible by train.

Anyone done it, and got any advice?

I was looking at renting from Tokyobike in Yanaka.

Not hired a bike, but not sure I'd want to given what the traffic is like...

Generally cycling in Japan is an alternative to walking, so cyclists are almost always on footpaths. Don't expect to go fast
I cycled in Hiroshima and Osaka little folding bikes which came with my Airbnb, and it was fine on the pavements. It's super safe so your bike won't get nicked when you leave it somewhere

I know nothing of Tokyo cycling myself, but if you're on Strava, take a look at this chap...

...some nice photos in there, and he's a local, so maybe have a look at some of his routes in the city? From there, you could check out other Strava users via "flybys" and also search for other peoples' routes via the segment leaderboards.

He started following me on Strava a while back, and I like to dip into his feed now and then just for the photos really.

Maybe try Strav's Heatmap too? https://www.strava.com/heatmap#6.25/128.60711/37.4...

Although you might have to open Googlemaps alongside it to make any real sense of it...

Spent 2 weeks bombing round tokyo and the surrounding areas on a bmx. Plenty of people cycling but its all very sedate, I found the best cycling was to be had along river banks and canals. Ususally have well maintained and wide paths and seemed to be popular with the carbon fibre and lycra brigade. Also found it a great way to bypass the busy streets and pavements.

Managed 62 miles in 32 degree heat one day. well pleased with myself smile

Also if you know where to look there are plenty of abandoned bikes you could adopt for you stay there. Usualy along forementioned paths or just off them. You will know they are abandoned as they will be stacked up against each other near a police notice sign saying "please stop abandoning bikes here" biggrin

Its a strange place, they will literally abandon a bike if it gets a flat tyre sometimes rolleyes
