Our son is two years old, three in February, and loves his balance bike. He’s big for his age and already seems to have grown too big for it.. What’s next? Should I buy a slightly bigger balance bike, or get him onto something with pedals early? If so, which one? Or, should I not rush these things and let him take his time?

Our daughter at seven has only just cracked ridding her bike, so there is a significant difference in their approach!

We went Specialized Hotwalk to Frog 43 when my lad was around 3yrs 4 months.

He’s quite tall for his age but didn’t quite have the leg strength to turn the pedals efficiently any younger so we waited it out a bit and as soon as we took the bike out the front of the shop for a test ride he was off, so proud to see such a little person bombing around on a bike without stabilisers.

Ideally go for a bike with a 14” wheel as this should then last them a few years, Frog 43, Isla CNOC etc.

Our son has a Frog Tadpole plus at the moment which is a 14" wheel balance bike as he's tall for his age. for his birthday in April I'm on the lookout for a Frog 48 (16" wheel). The frog bikes have a narrow bottom bracket which supposedly makes it easier for small people to pedal, seems like a good idea.

Could always get a 14" pedal bike and take the cranks and chain off for the time being until he is ready for pedals.

At 3 years old both of my kids progressed from balance bikes to a Specialized Hotrock 12. It seemed like a great little bike.

I got our daughter a Vitus Fourteen when she was 3. Initially I didn't fit the pedals, so just let her continue to use it as a balance bike until I felt that she was ready.

Just one thing on the Hotrock / Riprock has a back pedal (coaster) brake which may or may not put you off.

What size is the balance bike?

My lad is still getting to grips with his 12" wheeled Strider, but I'll be looking at a Frog 43 or Vitus 14 and running it without pedals initially.

My daughter has nailed her Strider but she is still too small for anything with pedals, so when she wakes up on her third birthday tomorrow she'll find this:

14" tyres and the frame flips to turn it from a small to larger sized balance bike as they grow. In the larger size you can fit the provided crank and pedals to turn it into a pedal bike. It also has front and rear cantilever brakes (with internal cable routing!)

Very impressed with the quality whilst putting it together tonight. https://www.littlebigbikes.com
