Hi,

Know nothing about bikes...

need to strip a kids one down to the frame to spray paint it.

all going well bar i cant get the crank ( think its called the crank ) off.

Its as below - should it be a case of undoing that black nut? wont budge but then i dont have the best tools.

want to check that is what i do ( or do i do something with the silver thing ) before adding more force.

thanks!

You need to undo the black nut. Then you need a crank puller to pull off the crank arm from the axle. Then you undo the silver locking ring from the bottom bracket and then remove the axle itself (you’ll need to remove the lockrings from both sides of the axle.

Special tools = the crank puller, which will screw into the bit where the black nut went, and as you tighten it, will pull the crank off the axle.

Yes remove nut. If there are threads around the inside of crank you might be able to then use a bottom bracket tool to remove crank from bike, if not will have to tap it off with wooden mallet once nut is removed.

It’s not bad at all once you have the tools and they are cheap on eBay!

Are they both right-hand threads? Or, is one left-hand?

Because that might account for the reason why it's difficult to undo.

The crank bolts are usually both 'normal' R/H threads, needa 14mm (?) socket. But a crank puller is almost always needed to get the blighters off. :-(
