Looking at getting an Edge 1030 (not going for a Wahoo as I much prefer the mapping on the Wahoo) and notice the stop/start button is at the bottom of the unit, rather than at the front of the unit. I have an "out-front" Garmin mount and I'm wondering whether it might be a bit tricky to start/stop the unit.....on my current Garmin (edge 1000 - there is a reason for upgrading, trust me!) if I have a route uploaded and I start moving it will say "course found, do you want to start?", is there a way on the 1030 to just get that sort of thing up on the screen when you just move, without a course loaded up?

Thanks in advance

As it happens, I do. It’s pretty good, for the most part. It has got some ‘foibles’ though. The standard sized out in front mount, isn’t long enough to accommodate it, if you want it to be bar mounted, you need the extended ‘large device’ mount ( you get one with it ). It has a habit of refusing to turn back on, if you turn it off, during a ride. The ‘trick’ is to leave it for a day or so, then it seems to start working again, as if by magic ( and you don’t seem to lose any data recorded up to the point where it sts itself either, thankfully). The ability to charge it wirelessly is great, and it updates ( and downloads data ) over WiFi, which is nice. The extra analysis it provides is very useful as well (things like calculating training effect, and required rest periods). I found it worthwhile to buy the unit, and sensor pack ( Cadence, wheel speed, and HR monitor) as the bundle works out as a cheaper way to do it.

I have an Edge 1000 with all the kit (sensors etc) but the 1030 is a tiny, tiny bit bigger....so I know roughly what I'm getting. My Edge 1000 has a few faults (like a broken SD card slot!) and the screen is meant to be much improved on the 1030 and they're the main reasons for upgrading. Plus I got a good deal (brand new for £330).

Any idea if you can start the timer without using the button at the bottom though?

Cheers biggrin

No, you have to press the button to start. Obviously it restarts automatically from auto pause. The screen is very good, you can adjust its sensitivity to touch as well.

The racewear mount may be the right length you need.

Is the battery life any better on the 1030?

I won't be using the Raceware stuff any more..... Rubbish in my experience. The Garmin mounting part is loose, I tried the Exposure light carrier and the mount snapped /causing my garmin and light to hit the deck). I got another, and again, garmin rattled in the mounting part. I've got the official Canyon one which fits the edge 1000 absolutely fine, but the 1030 is a bit longer.

Battery life is about 1/3 to 1/2 better on the 1030 I believe, plus the ability to easily attach a battery pack.

I have got a couple of 300Km rides completed, with navigation, and still had 20% battery left, which is much better than I’ve managed with older Garmins.

Well, it's arrived and fits my current mount.

RE starting/stopping....not a hope using the buttons though! Fortunately, I have di2 and I can set it so one of the hood buttons can start/stop the timer simply by pressing and holding it down smile

I start it with the unit upside down, then rotate it when I set off.

Can someone with the 1030 tell me what maps you have installed? Mine is currently only showing 2, and the detail isn't what my 1000 is! I'm just trying to reinstall/update them using garmin express.

I’ve got U.K. and Europe on mine. There are often updates, and new maps, but it seems to download them automatically over WiFi and I rarely notice when it’s happened.

After having updated the maps it's now absolutely fine smile
