Looking at getting a Gravel/adventure bike

No super low stacked cross bikes please

that can take 40/42mm tyres

Discs or course, BB5/BB7 or TRP Spyre/HD-RD's

Minimum 2 x 9 Sora

Tiagra 2x10 or a Sram 1x11 are good.

UK shops, max £700, may push it a little for the right bike

Looking at the Genesis CDF/CDA's

suggestions?

I, too, have started to think about something a little more off-road orientated, given that I've recently got into road cycling.

I think for £700 you're going to be push to find something, if you're nothing about 2nd hand?

I started to look at the new Ribble Adventure bike, which can take 650B wheels - and ended up looking at hardtail MTB with lock outs. I like the idea of Adventure bikes, but, to me, I can't see the benefit over a mountain bike.

Cannondale Topstone looks nice although slightly over budget.

I've just got a Specialized Diverge and really rate it. 2018 models onwards take up to a 42 tyre.

Adventure bikes ride like a road bike on the road. Genesis Croix de Fer is an excellent choice, sensible geometry with good amount of fork trail for stability and not a slammed aero riding position either. Try and find an older model year, Tiagra 2 X 10 is excellent and you can use an 11-34 cassette which is great for climbing

I bought this s/h, a GT Grade for £275.

Full SRAM Apex groupset

I swapped the brakes (Spyres for Hy/Rds) and fitted a new freewheel and bottom bracket, as both were shot (the freewheel I knew about, the BB I discovered when stripping the bike down).

Rides really well, is comfy and gives me disc brakes and full coverage mud guards for winter use.

I’d be looking at a lightly-used S-H cyclocross bike for those requirements and budget.

If you’re anywhere near a big city something suitable will pop up on Scumtree.

I got this Boardman for about £200:

I would have thought you'd be looking at second had for that spec and price.

Ribble has a new CGR AL in that spec but its £900

Cube NuRoad £999

CaadX £999

Boardman ADV 8.9 £1000

Specialized Diverge E5 Elite £999

Can you tell what I've been looking at recently biggrin

I have emailed Specialized and asked what bottom bracket the Diverge E5 sport has

hoping for a stock BSA threaded and not some press-fit abomination

I believe the Carbon frames use BB386EVO press-fit, Aluminium use BSA.

£700 seems optimistic for that spec new. You might find something 2018 (or older) or ex demo, or you'll need a really good deal.

799 for this week only allegedly at CRC.

Spec seems strong, no idea what it's like.

I've just bought one of these on the Bike to Work Scheme https://www.cyclesurgery.com/p/bergamont-granduran...

Only ridden it for 25km on road so far, but so far it's been great. Looking forwards to Sunday to test it on a mixed route.

Just to add a recommendation for my own bike - Norco Search. Mine’s a couple of years old but has full hydraulic disc brakes, 2x11, thru axles front and rear, and carbon frame. Standard tyres are 35c and I reckon it could take 40c.

Rides well on the road, I’ve not done more than 100km in one go on it, but it felt comfy for that. Has also been on some proper rutted singletrack more than once. Feels a bit burly, but in a good way. Have replaced the rear wheel with a 29” mtb wheel due to over-enthusiastic use...

I’m both impressed and pleased! No idea of UK prices.

Pinnacle range at Evans is very good, still happy with mine after almost 3 years. Went CX racing for a year on it and now running it as a winter bike.

On the Norco point above, also very good bikes, my Girlfriend has one, although it is extremely heavy especially for the frame size. But other than that very well put together and she likes it.
