Finally got around to putting together the bike, mainly out of pure anger after the lbs were so effing useless!

Mason Bokeh, weighs in at 8.3Kg, which is somewhat less than it's rider biggrin

Very impressed with the service from bike24, ordered last Sunday and delivered today. I was about to fleabay a secondhand XT mech but they had them new for less.

The rear mech hanger needs swapping so Mason are sending one. The front mech wiring needs to come out and all the little port covers to be fitted. The main thing was to check that the di2 worked with the new mech, it did. I'll ride it about for a bit then order some wheels from PX, I think i have spent enough for a week it'll be fine on 700c. I think it'd also look much nicer with Hope calipers as well, but they can wait. Those brakes on the Definition were useless, I am hoping it was just the pads, plenty of reports online that they sieze and leak, if I get an excuse to change them that'll be it! The crank is an old TT one, might have to get that coated, not sure if it looks right in silver?

Specs (if anyone looks to build one and is wondering what works)

Mason Bokeh frame
Hunt 700c wheels
3T stem and bars
Ultegra Di2 (2016 with no firmware updates)
XT 8050 medium rear mech
11/42 XT cassette
DA 7800 130 crank
Raceface narrow wide 42T chainring
118 link chain
Flat to post mount caliper adaptors
R785 road calipers
Obviously saddle, tape and all that crap

I forgot the mineral oil and hoses so that's tomorrow's job. Then see what it's like.

Looks fantastic - what bottom bracket did you use?

Thanks, it’ll be better with the 650 wheels and balloon tyres smile

The whole Mason thing came about as I already had a lot of the bits.... I.e. a Chris King BB and 27.5 seatpoat rofl

The BB has been on the first road bike I built, then the CX bike then the daily hack before the Definition and now this. It’s covered about 28K km, can’t say enough good things about it.

The seat post writing is a bit fugly, but it’s very light and kills road buzz quite well. I suppose a 3T one could go on to make it all similar. Never really been one to worry that much, it’ll be covered in mud hopefully.

Those wires, please straighten those wires, then I may be able to appreciate the rest of it more, once I can avert my eyes from those wires...

The wires, lol. Although I’d like to change to the newer junction box and hide everything. The only tubes I had left we’re from 80 deep wheels, I think it’ll startv a thing amonst hipsters, might paint them biggrin

It’s got huge clearance, the 28’s look swamped. Have fitted all the hole covers now and will be putting some clear silicone around them where the hoses and wires enter/exit.

Let’s see how it goes.

Never got past the wires, but now that you mention it. Slipshod OP, very slipshod...

I really like that, probably how I'd build a new road bike given the money. 1x wide range with DI2 and hydro discs all just makes a genuine difference to using and enjoying a bike.

biggrin

I'm not liking the tie wrap holding this junction box onto the stem. I think I am going to bond it on there so it all looks cleaner. Still waiting for Yodel, not long now though. Typically it's pissing down, maybe long valves with some dice on will actually work.......

I'm not bothered about the valve length, but the tyre/valve orientation...

That's what I was referring to.

Rather than glue the junction box, how about something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M-Part-6mm-spacer-with-...

It’s all in one piece, couple of things. The rear brake is just refusing to bleed, it doesn’t make sense. I’ve got it slightly better but it’s still crap. Front is held on but the performance is awful, has to be the pads as al it does is make loads of noise?

Any tips on how to cure the rear brake issue and what pads to use to improve things?

Looks ok though smile no bar tape until the brakes are right, the junction box is bonded on, just held in place by the cable tie.

All finished today, haven’t had much time recently but I want to ship the Mason off to Italy as I’m missing cycling during the work weeks. The rear brake finally came good. Ended up taking the top port cover off and repeatedly pulling the lever. Then left the lever taped tight for a few evenings.
With more fluid than air in the lines I changed the pads as I figured they’d been contaminated. Instantly better. After bedding in it’s how I expected in the first place.
The bar tape was a real sod. Didn’t help it was pretty cold in the garage but now it’s on it looks ok. Hoping to get some 650 wheels soon, still undecided on which ones to go for? I’ll look for some balloon tyres for the 700’s, the 28’s look lost smile
Really chuffed how it’s turned out, ita something a bit different and I know my way around it now.

So, we’re off to Italy, all packed in the bike box.

Brief ride shows the gearing is ok, but maybe when I have more strength the top gear will be a bit short. 32-34kmh is about tbe limit for me cadence wise, that’s the trade off with 1x and a mega low 1st gear I guess.

It’s a handsome thing. Still waiting for the bigger panaracer tyres with tan sidewalls. Really want tubeless due to the tracks near work.

Lovely bikes, close up.

I saw one on my ride today, propped against a tree while the owner took a phone call. They just look so "right"...

I'm just finishing off my 1x, I've gone 10 - 42 with a 44t hoping for best of both worlds, the top and bottom gear pretty identical to my 2x.

Yes, I reckon that’s the sweet spot. 42 - 42 is very low.
