Still chasing down a creak on my bike, got my LBM to check the rear wheel for me and he spotted the cassette has about 2mm movement/play on the hub (Mavic Ksyrium disc / 105). It seems there is movement in the hub, difficult to see but more obvious when the cassette is on. Asked for the Mavic dealer where I got the wheel from to look at it and they say it is normal but they will strip and rebuild the hub for me. Is it normal for some play in the cassette? Wheel and cassette have only 700kms on them

It's not movement in the cassette, it is wear to a plastic bush in the Mavic Hub(at least it was in my case)

You can either get a new freehub body (which wasn't that easy to come by for a 2008 Crossmax Hub).

Or, try Ebay for a replacement plastic bush at about 10$

There are at least two guys in the USA in competition to make these things which is somewhat surprising but there you go.

Replacing the bush is very easy.

  • 700km seems very soon for that kind of wear, though.

As above, it’s fairly typical for some Mavic freehubs to fail like this. The other issue that sometimes causes problems is that the freehub body is relatively soft, and the cassette is relatively hard. You end up with the cassette biting into the splines, which can get interesting if your putting some effort in.

As for creaks, I’ve got a check list I go through systematically these days. It pretty much goes; cleats, pedals, chain ring bolts, bottom bracket bearings, cable guide screwed to the frame under the bottom bracket, QR Skewers, points where spokes cross each other, spoke nipples, rims, stem, Bars, seat rails, seat post. I’ve yet to find a creak that has got past that list laugh

So I took it back to the mavic dealer to look at. They stripped, re lubed and rebuilt, saying they found nothing wrong. However there is now no play in the cassette. Will have time tomorrow to see if it is actually okay and has solved the creaking. Never strilled a free hub down so unsure if play is something you can remove when you rebuild a hub?
