Last weekend at Elvington Airfield, Neil "Soupy" Campbell in conjunction with Andy Frost of Red Victor fame set a new British, Commonwealth and European Motor assisted Land Speed cycling record of 149.16 MPH. See the footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qINioBFuDMw and the Porsche press release on the event https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-c...

Interesting how much smaller that wind deflector is than Guy Martin's previous UK record

Presumably at some point you start to get a bit of a push from the air recirculating behind you

Sounds like different rules/methods (involving a towed start from my brief read-through) but the World Record went from 167 mph to 184 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats on Sunday...

This Strava club post gave me the 'heads up'... https://www.strava.com/clubs/198268/posts/3044235

And gave me a link to this... https://www.wired.com/story/denise-mueller-korenek...

Which got me to a Youtube link... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CFTqHbgsKs

...which shows she was towed up to speeds in excess of "insane" before pedaling a huge gear (which King Kong probably couldn't overcome the inertia of) for a measured mile.

Top Fuel Dragster? Check
Woman Driver? Check
Female Cyclist? Check

Utterly bonkers, and for the most part probably completely pointless, yes. But such eccentricity ought to be applauded in todays risk-averse society. She's 45 years old, so it probably qualifies as a middle-age crisis event too.

Mad, bad, and certainly not for me, but...

Denise Mueller-Korenek (and team)...

...we salute you!

Same rules. The Guinness World record stipulates 200m under your own steam. Congratulations to the Yanks though , very impressive, but we will be coming for them next year wink

I wonder if either attempt was in response to the other? Or perhaps just a coincidence?

Not that it matters.

Another link, this time to a bicycling.com story on the record... https://www.bicycling.com/news/a23281242/denise-mu...

And from Bikeradar... https://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/article/cyclin...

Just a coincidence but we were keeping an eye on how she was doing throughout the weekend.

Our attempt was carried out in our uniquely British way, in the YT vid, you can see my dog's tug toy being used as the tether...

My apologies - I hadn't realised from your OP that you were involved in the attempt. I didn't mean to "piss on anyone's chips" with the link to the Yanks' attempt either. I'd found out about it before I saw your post, but thought it better to stick it in the same thread than start a new thread for something in the same vein...

Haha, not a problem mate, we were just doing a test run before going for the WR next year and were looking to be happy with 140! smile What she achieved is very impressive, but she had the advantage of space over our attempt, 5 miles plus extra for braking vs our 2 miles all in and a car with the power to do it as the Porsche was a last minute loan from Porsche UK themselves.
