I currently ride a Dolan Dual for leisure rides, typically 25 to 40 miles long 1 or 2 times a week and with a couple of longer rides a year. I like the bike, but after a couple of issues, it is now a bit of a parts bin. (older ultegra brakes, 105 drivetrain except sora crank. The groupset are different colours as well).

I live near Cardiff, so I cant avoid hills, but certainly dont aim for them!

To help justify a new purchase, I have convinced myself that a change to disc brakes and 28mm rubber makes sense given the poor state of the lanes i ride.

I am finding it difficult to find a bike (£2k budget) with exact spec I would like- why do most of them come with cheapo wheels!

So I have speced a Bowman Pilgrims disc with 105 that comes to about £2,200 with some hunt or chinese carbon wheels.

Or, I could strip the Dolan back and just get new wheels and 105 groupset for say £1k.

I know it is hard to say what is the right thing to do, but I suppose what I am asking is whether people who do similar riding to me have changed to wider rubber and discs, and whether it has been worth it in their opinion?

Wheelbase currently have the cervelo S3 on sale for £2150. There’s no better bike than that under £2500. People will argue something else is better because that’s what they own but they are wrong. You don’t need discs and it will take 25s which are fine for South Wales. Happy to help.
