Now I'm getting a bit fitter with a view to doing London-Brighton and some other events next year, I'm thinking the time has come to move on from a 6yr old Boardman hybrid to a road bike. One thing I'd like to keep would be hydraulic disc brakes, as I like the feel of them but I would be open to recommendations for something lighter/quicker around the £2k range, give or take..

My current usage is a few times a week, with two sessions during the week either 6-7 laps of Battersea park at a consistent speed (12-14 miles) or out to Richmond Park (20ish miles), and a longer spell with currently 30 miles at the weekend, looking to build from there..I've pretty much been going from couch to whatever distance I can manage this summer and looking to build on that.

So, looking for something that will be good now, and allow me to build up distance, speed, etc. as fitness grows, without the need to change in a year or so - any suggestions/recommendations?

I subscribe to theory that a £2k new bike is a £2k new bike. Have a go on a few from e.g. trek, cannondale, specialized, giant, boardman, Merida and pick the one you like best

Or do what I would do and buy lightly used. Your £2k will get a bike that has hardly been used and would a new rrp of c.£4K riskier but not by much

I bought an Eastway road bike several years ago,

I don't use it often but it's still in great condition and all the Sram fitment brakes/gears are still functioning perfectly,

Obviously Trek,Cannondale & Giant are the go to brands but just my personal experience of Eastway has been positive

Good time to be shopping as shops are starting to reduce 2018 bikes to make way for 2019 models. A lot of the time the 2019 model is a different colour and might have a few minor spec changes, so a good deal is 2018 is the way to go.

Have a look at something like the Cannondale Synapse Ultegra. Ultegra is very good kit. Weak spot of the model is the wheels which are a bit heavy and and quite cheap as they are only £150 to buy separately. However, the wheels easily upgraded in the future if (when) the cycling bug bites.

Depending on what size you need and where you find it, £2100 to £2300 (was £2700) eg

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Cannondale-Synapse-Carbon...

As said though, visit some LBSs and get some test rides. Should be plenty of choice in London with Sigma Sports, Evans etc

As others have said, have a look at different brands and dealers. Personally. I'd go for a bike fit (handy) if chucked in with part of the sale. This will help determine how aggressive you can go with the geometry and which bikes would be suitable.

Different brands will have different fits, I found Specialised to be a bit crunched up, and got on better with Trek. That said, with a proper bike fit they can be made to fit, but getting one to fit out of the box will save buying stems and seat posts.

If you shop in the sales, you could do very well, but even at RRP, toy should be able to get a main brand carbon endurance bike with hydraulic discs and Shimano 105, or perhaps Ultegra.

Thanks for all the replies, some food for thought..

I can feel some budget creep coming on already, and that Time bike is tempting with that level of discount..

Have a look at Giant’s range for best value. You can get a hydraulic disc equipped TCR (all rounder geometry) or Defy (relaxed geometry) starting from £1,200, or even a propel disc for slightly over £2,000.

20% off the current model year bikes as well. Giants factory in Taiwan manufacture bikes for the many high end brands including Canyon and Colnago.

I’d steer well clear of that Look.

I would sacrifice the disc brakes and get a Planet EC-130 with Electronic Ultegra for £2k all in. Very good value and I know someone who races one and rates it very highly smile

To bring this thread full circle. I took my time to decide (four months), looked at a few, and was all set to buy the Cannondale Synapse Ultegra mentioned above until I was tempted by this.

https://www.evanscycles.com/bmc-roadmachine-02-two...

I'd sat on one to compare sizes with the Cannondale, but had initially discounted it due to a much higher price (probably a higher model as well) - then saw the reduction on the 2018 model. Just waiting to pick it up now, and hopefully will have some decent weather to get out on it over the next few months..

Hunting down a used bike could take ages and sizing/condition can be a complete lottery. Also you could end up having to drive miles to go and get it.

AT £2k, you have a lot of choice. You should be able to get disc hydro disc brakes and carbon for around £2k from someone like Canyon.

Selection will be limited to bikes that aren't super popular and poor sizes if you want something from the 2018 model range 'sales'

Ribble should also be able to offer something which suits your requirements.

Thanks, that original piece of advice stuck, and even though there did seem to be a bit of a premium on the frame of the BMC the sale brought it to pretty much equivalent to the Cannondale.

Why I no read? So sorry I offended you but not reading every sentence of the thread.

I hope the OP enjoys his Cannondale.
