Just thought I'd check in here before buying.

My front tyre has a small tear from a piece of glass. I'm thinking better to be safe and just replace it.

I haven't even ridden the thing in a year but hoping to spend a bit more time cycling.
I'll prob be doing 20 mile rides at 15mph. Dry use only.
Bike is a Merida Scultura, maybe 2013/14

I think it has Vittoria tyres on at present. Should I replace like for like or is there better stuff available?

Had a quick browse of Wiggle. Not sure what the difference is between the folding/wire tyres.

p.s I like cheap.

wire bead tyres come big and round, they don't fold so you buy them wheel shaped, they are a little bit heavier and cheaper than their folding equivalents

folding tyres are more expensive, but a bit lighter normally and come folded up into boxes.

Tyres aren't often really better or worse than one another, there are a lot of different options and most are good in their own way.

Cosmetically, gumwall tyres are all the rage. Most options are light, supple, good to race on maybe but may be a bit light on puncture protection.

For commuting and the ultimate in puncture protection Schwalbe Marathan Plus tyres do the business, but they weigh an absolute tonne.

Continental tyres are very popular and have an option to cover most bases, a cheap one which will get you down the road. Gatorskins and Gator Hardshells are reliable for puncture protection but some say they are sketchy in the wet. I've not had a problem with them. Continental 4 seasons are seen as a good all rounder, quite pricey but ride well and have good puncture protection. Better riding but with less puncture protection are the gp4000sII

I don't have much experience with others, you don't need to buy them very often really so get only limited exposure generally - hope this helps!

How small a tear and where?
You don’t replace the whole tyre it it’s a small cut, just the inner tube of that got punctured (or repair the inner tube if you really like cheap!)

Does the inner tube poke through this "tear", or is it just a small cut? If the latter, fill it with super glue from the outside and carry on riding it.

If the tube pokes through, you could use a repair patch or tyre boot on the inside of the tyre.

I cover anywhere between 10 and 20,000km per year, so I get through my fair share of tyres. If you want some decent, cheap tyres, you can't go wrong with Michelin Lithions, usually to be found for £25 a pair including tubes. I commute on mine in all weathers and, if kept properly inflated, they only puncture when they're worn out.

Did 6 miles on it today and it held up. Might try a touch of glue if that's a reccomended fix.
