Not looking to go full Marathon Plus but looking for a decent level of protection from a 700c road tyre in 23 and 25 sizes.

What recommendations are there?

Continenral Gatorskins, GP 4 Seasons, or just go for GP4000S2 and hope you get lucky.

Another vote for Conti GP 4 Season.

I do have some Hutchinson Fusion 5 11Storm Performance waiting for the new wheels I've ordered though (Conti don't offer a tubeless clincher).

I've been served well by Schwalbe Durano.

I’ve been running Conti GP TT all summer and haven’t had a single puncture. Pretty much any tyre has “some” puncture protection.

Durano. Go for 28mm. No reason to go smaller if they fit in your frame.

While my gatorskins have been great in terms of puncture resistance and wear, I'm not convinced about their wet grip. They can be quite sketchy in the wrong conditions.

Durano much better.

I'm convinced about their wet grip - convinced it's a liability. I have them on the back of one of my bikes, wouldn't want one on the front.

Glad to see it's not just me then!

Same here, can't remember the last time I had a puncture and I ride a lot on country lanes.

I don't know about you but I've never bothered with Durano Plus because it's a fair bit heavier and like you, I never get punctures anyway. The slightly heavier Durano DD might be an option though.

Agree with both of you no grip in the wet but no punctures either in thousands of dry miles!

If you want bigger volume, the Marathon Supreme (not the other, very hefty, Marathons) are excellent.

I use 32mm on my commuter cross bike, road and gravel tracks, having previously used Durano 28mm.

I did a century road & gravel/cobbles Sportive last year on them too. There appeared to be no penalty from the fatter tyres on the road for me.

Am impressed with Vittoria Corsa G+. Only 1,500 miles so far but are light, durable and roll well - claim to have a graphene layer for puncture resistance. Much better suited to UK roads than the Pirelli P-zero velos which acted as a grit magnet (though they were nice on Mallorca tarmac).
