Long story short, 12ish year old Trek MTB with original Deore XT components that are now worn. Frame is still good, and I hate scrapping good stuff, but no idea how compatible new components will be.

Also, I don't have the time, patience, or tools to fit it all, so would be a bike shop job.

Should I bite the bullet and go for a new bike?

If you’re happy with the rest of the bike, new components will just slip on fine. On my commuter, the only existing parts are the handlebars, stem and seat post.

500 quid will get you an all new hardtail in a different league to a twelve year old trek.
Even current Deore will make your XT feel dated.
Modern components are soo much better, plus after you get the bill for labour plus bike shop retail prices you may as well get a completely new bike that will feel soo much better.

What will you be using the bike for? If you're planning on riding off road a new bike will probably be a better bet.

Having said that, I new bike may make financial sense too.
