We are trying to buy a bike for one of our sons, but neither Evans nor Cycle Republic sells a 26 inch wheel bike with suspension.

Is suspension going out of vogue?

Evans says that is what his height requires. I am wondering whether that is the wrong advice.

How old is your child and what height? My 6year olds ride 20inch wheeled bikes both with front suspension. 24inch is the next stage for kids then adult sizes like 27.5 or 29ers.

2nd hand 26” wheel bikes are pretty cheap these days. Could probably get something with a really nice spec that’s around 5-6 years old.

I’m going to take a bit of a guess that you are looking at something like the 26” hoy bonaly rather than a mountain bike which is a proper kids bike rather than a 26” adult mountain bike.

A 26” kids bike with no suspension is going to be a much better choice for actually learning to ride and going on decent rides than adding the unnecessary weight of poor quality suspension. These bikes are designed to make cycling easier although kids sometimes want a ‘cool’ bike with suspension, if you can convince your kes to get one you will reap the rewards.

So 26” may be out of fashion for adults but are still an important step for kids before they move up to a full sized adult bike.

He has got a Ridgeback now. It's not that heavy and the suspension seems pretty good.

I started a similar thread a few weeks back (https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1747313) as my son was in that awkward "too tall to be worth buying a 24, but too small for a 27.5" range. There are a few 26" hardtails out there, but don't know about full suspension.

Thanks. I gather there was a newspaper article (my wife found it) bemoaning the very problem.

In 26” can’t see the point in specific kids at all just get a small or woman’s frame.

Yep. First question, "how many gears?"

I love that bike. But I'm 52 so that doesn't prove much.

Sons and Daughters are not heavy enough to activate the usual cheap suspension fitted to kids bikes so it become a trend rather than a usefull function.

We went through it all with my two, 9 & 11 and we ended up with a great pair of Frog Bikes, Thier Hybrid range, like isla's

Nice and lite, easy to control and manover, the girls love them and I love loading and unloading them on the bike rack!

For kids bikes, yes, well for quality bikes anyway.

The problem is this, their isn't much economy of scale for kids bikes - it's a much smaller market so if you want a decent FS kids bike it going to cost more than the adult equivalent, and it's very few parents who'll drop £2k+ on a kids bike that will be outgrown in 18 months.

On the face of it, 26" bikes should be the answer, there's decades worth of R&D in 26" forks, wheels etc, the tooling it already there, you'd think it would be cost effective to knock out short runs of 26" forks etc - it's almost like the Cycle industry doesn't wants the 26" market dead wink

Anyway, ramble over - lots of people in the OPs shoes are buying Small and even XS sized FS 26" bikes from eBay etc, they're perhaps not as cheap as you think they should be (L sizes are worth a lot less) and doing them up for their kids.

We've given up on 26" and ordered one of these to have a look at.
