Hi guys,

I've decided I need to start cycling, the gut is starting to get a little big and I don't run hehe

From my research I've landed on a Specialized Rockhopper as my first bike, I am 5'9" so the 17.5" frame is what I'm after. I've searched eBay, Gumtree and Facebook etc.

I've found one that's rather nice looking but the seller doesn't know the frame size, can anyone guess by this one bad picture? The wheels are 26" if that helps.

P.S If anyone has a better idea for a sub £200 starter bike I'm also up for ideas thumbup

I’d be a bit wary of second hand bikes unless you are looking for a project to do up. A lot will need a lot of work to make them usable. The cost of this can soon add up to the cost of a new one.

Seller says it's just had a service, new cassette and a fluid change. To be honest I never even realised you serviced bikes!?

I am competent with a set of tools though and don't mind having a go.

O/P will most of your riding be on the rough stuff?

If you're mostly going to be on tracks and trails then go for something more comfortable in position and that doesn't have suspension - it will weigh less, and you will get more out of it than a bike designed for going fast over rough stuff.

If you're going to be mostly on roads, get a road or hybrid (flat bars) bike.

That bike in the OP looks really small, like 14" or 15". Also looks like the fork is too long from the way the whole frame is tilted backwards. Will make the steering weird.

Wouldn't touch a 26" mountain bike these days, dead end. Aim for a 27.5" or 29" wheel bike. I know it's only a cheap project but still.

Thanks for the advice folks, I've just organised the purchase of my first bike.

Cube Aim Pro on a medium frame with 29" wheels. Recent service, new pedals, cassette and chain. Bargain and £200 thumbup

Now the spending starts, need cages and bottles, a lock and a bike rack for the car hehe
