My dad has enlisted my help in finding him a new road bike. Criteria are:

- compact gearing with 30 or 32 tooth cassette, his current bike has 34/25 and he's struggling on steeper sections
- hydraulic disc brakes
- not too aggressive geometry as he's old ;-)
- budget up to £2k

Will be used for sportives up to ~100 miles.

Current favourite is the Cube Attain GTC Race Disc which has Ultegra and shimano hydraulic brakes.

Any other suggestions?

How about the Ribble Gran Fondo Disc.

£1,909 with the new Ultegra groupset and you can spec whatever else you like.

What size?

Hargreaves have ex-display Cannondale Synapse Ultegra at £1999 in 54cm

https://www.hargreaves-cycles.co.uk/m39b0s412p8239...

They also have the 105 version in 54cm for £1500ish.

Canyon Endurace gets really good reviews. This Carbon model is under budget:

Thanks for all the suggestions lots to look at. Have sent them over to him. I think he takes a 54cm frame but will check.

I'd recommend the Giant Defy Advanced, its what I got and I am at least 40!

Good carbon frame
Hyd disk brakes
Really comfy
Selection of price points depending on groupset and colour (one or other may be more important!)

About to be a change to 2019 bikes so discounts probably inbound on these but currently with tiagra - 1500, 105 - 1700, ultegra 1850

I’d echo this...

I have an SL 9.0 with full Ultegra. (They rejigged the numbering last year, this years 7.0 was the 8.0)

I’ve done several 100 mile rides on it and I’ve never failed to be impressed with it, it just goes; on the flat, up hill, downhill....

Super comfy, don’t be put off with direct sales, use the Canyon online measurement tool to determine frame size.

If need to alter stem length like I did, they will send you one on an exchange basis to try before returning the one you don’t want.

The Cube Attain with hydraulic Tiagra 10-speed looks a heck of a lot of bike for the cash, and comes in at about half your budget.

Giant Defy Advanced 1,2 or 3

I chose the 1 and bought from Tredz when they had money of offers, just covered 1600 miles over the last 4 months. Comfy and good for going up hills.

O/P If you check the spec on this, it's 105 all round, plus it has DT Swiss wheels and proper tyres. It's a great spec bike.

It's more than just the spec though, check out the on line reviews of the Endurace and a lot of folks rate it highly.

It fits your requirement well. I'm very pleased with my older version.

I had a 2017 Defy Advanced 2 until it was run over by a van in January, luckily not me! 5000 miles covered in the year, all that was needed was a new bottom bracket.

I now have a neon Green 2018 model. As you say it is comfy, I've just done the northern Coast to Coast 150 on it. No complaints, apart from the heat and hills biggrin

The Canyon does look very nice, I'm a big fan of their bikes, really fancy one of the new Inflite CX bikes as for some strange reason I want to give CX racing a go. Dad put off by the mail order only issue though so bit of a non-starter there.

I took delivery of the Cube Attain GTC Race Disc two weeks ago. Its a lovely, smooth ride- done 200km so far and I am over the moon with it. Everything just seems quality.

I must say I was mixed about buying direct.

In reality, the process was easy and Canyon were pretty good at communicating through the order, build and despatch process.

As a further comment, I was giving the bike a clean last night and noticed the plastic cover for the seat post bolt was missing.

I’ve used the Chat function on the Canyon website this morning and two replacements are now on order FOC.

Can’t fault the customer service....

The Cannondale, Giant, Canyon et6c all good bikes. I have the Cube which is now my commuter and has been great after being used in all weather all year round, but sure the others would as well.
If possible get him to try some first.
I didn't, but paying a little extra and going through your LBC has its benefits.
It's just personal preference for him, everyone goes faster on a good looking bike....

The Ultegra model is £270 off during the TdF, so only £79 over budget (about £130 over with packaging & delivery).

Don't worry about the mail order thing, unless your Dad is concerned about his LBS telling him to ps off when he takes it in with a flat tyre?

I'm just about to order my Ultimate. I've wanted one for four years and had the money put aside for a month but was waiting for this sale!
