GPX - Google Maps

Ive never used a GPX file, nor have I used the navigation function whilst riding (only driving)

Now, I've managed to get google maps on my phone to show me the route using the GPX file, which is good. But.....

Is there a way it can work like the navigation app and give me directions, or do I simply need to keep panning the map around as I go?
