The guy in it is a good amateur and came 12th (I think) in the Haute Route. After completing a course he improved his ftp by 100W and still found he couldn't break into the top ten. His conclusion was genetics make you a World Tour rider not drugs.

Also recall reading an article a few years ago about an American amateur who did similar to find out what would happen. He made some impressive gains.

Also recall this article but I can't find it now. He tried all sorts of stuff including testosterone, EPO and HGH, finding some of it extremely enjoyable.http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-32983932

All very well but the guy in the article is a competitive triathlete, the OP asks for the effects on a "fat bloke". It's like comparing the effects of high octane super unleaded on a 1980s Morris Minor and a current supercar. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-32983932

Beetroot juice apparently has a much greater effect on untrained people. Wouldn't surprise me if other performance enhancers behave in a similar way. After all, if these substances had minimal effect on average people, then they wouldn't use them as drugs to treat illness.

Ah. Firstly the administration of EPO is quite different in the two situations (generally medically it's given as part of the blood, sporting application it's given surplus to blood), secondly greater lean mass and lung capacity means a greater response to blood doping.frisbee said:

There isn't a fixed answer to this, as there are variations in any individuals response to doping. A genetically gifted athlete could be a poor responder to EPO, while a signicantly less gifted individual could be a super responder.

AFAIA physiologically the response to extra red blood cells would be the same in both - increased performance. There can be complications if the user suffers from renal inflammation.
