My drive train on the roadie is all worn so need replacing.

I am currently rocking a triple at the front but now as I'm riding with a club want to move to a compact and since it's all worn now (next 6 months) is the time to do it.

I'm gonna get the parts bit by bit then build it so as to spread the costs, obviously they need to work together so I need to make the decision whether I go 10 or 11 speed.

Other than 11 being the latest and greatest and advantages/disadvantage to either for durability/weight/niceness?

i don't see us going back, so I'd fit 11 speed for better spares support in the future.

I've built some sweet bikes recently with Tiagra 4600 on which is so cheap, but you can get 4700 for about £230 incl brakes so my next budget banger will be 4700. The nice thing about 4600 was the external gear cables which are so smooth in operation.

11 speed is nice too. closer gears and all that. There are good deals on the just superseded 6800 out there but if you buy bit by bit then you'll get fleeced. 5800 is the bargain 11 speed option but I've taken it off and replaced it with Sram Rival1 as I preferred the clutch mech and narrow wide 1x on my CX bike.

You'll need 11 speed compatible wheels too.

11 it is then, bit by bit was to allow for ebay/forum bargains, wheels are fine they're 11 speed with spacer.

Think I want SRAM this time, just look at that bling carbon.

Are you sure?

1x12 appears to be the new latest and greatest contender. Have a read up on SRAM Eagle if not aware of it.

Thought 12 speed was mtb only, and eagle is very much out of budget.

oh ok, didn't realise it was MTB only. As you were smile

Don't know which SRAM is for roads, but the SRAM GX/X01/X1/XX1 1x11 stuff is all interchangeable I think, so can mix and match to meet your budget, and then upgrade as you go along.

My MTB has the SRAM NX and slowly upgrading as I find deals, I have a XX1 chain waiting to go on.

Why not keep the triple? I hate 1x drive trains, they just look st/stupid. A triple gives you a massive range without massive gaps between each gear, if you can be bothered pushing a changer on the left. Weight difference is immaterial in the real world as is maintenance if you do more than ride it and look at it

I'm doing a bit by bit eBay/classifieds swap to sram red right now, coming from 105 10sp. I gather all the sram 10 speed bits will do 11 apart from obviously the cassette, chain and shifters. So far, I grabbed a new "2012" 10sp chainset from planetx for £150 and used 2011 style shifters (10 sp), rear and front mech for £140.

Pre/post 2012 is important for yaw action front mech, so I plan to sell the 2011 one and buy a new rival or force fd so I will have crisp yaw shifting.

In time, if some 11sp shifters come up I'll just have to buy a cassette and chain to move over.

Personally I'd grab a bargain 10sp 105 setup from someone upgrading, or just replace the worn chainrings.

Honestly, 10sp -11sp makes piss all difference, unless you're selling it.

Apart from slowly all 10 speed stuff will be phased out. Pointless buying into old stuff. Not like 11 speed stuff is expensive anyway.

The guy I followed last night riding a CX bike with a 1x chainset would beg to disagree I suspect

It seems my bike knowledge is a bit out of date. When i read 10 speed I still think 2 x 5 ... so 11 speed left me rather confused. Last time I bought a cassette, 6 sprockets was seen as a little extravagant. Then again, the derailleurs weren't indexed and were controlled by levers on the down tube.
