...while looking at an equally sad local story.


67-year-old Maris Ozols dies of "cardiac arrest" at the 13 mile mark of 'The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 46'.

Sad, yet another loss to a family during this event. No stain on the event obviously, but it seems to be far too regular an occurrence. Worrying as a cyclist, because many of those who've died like this at sportives, marathons, etc, are described as "fit, healthy, and active".

Nothing that the organisers, nor the participants, really, can do to prevent it. No-one's fault, no "lessons to be learned". Just very sad for those involved in trying to save him, and for family and friends of Maris.

I think the statistics are, that if you put 100k people in a room (probably car park!) together for a day, you'd expect at least one or two of them to die.

Tough for passers by to see I imagine to, especially those who helped out and I assume carried on? Not sure how I would feel.

I don't find it worrying as a cyclist. Many people are at risk of heart attack and I'm sure cycling will reduce it.

Not really. Being a tad cynical, but they're hardly going to report that she/he was a fat old knacker that barely did any exercise and binged on coke are they... little like every car theif being a promising young footballer.

People die, it's sad but a fact. Better that guy died on a bike doing himself a bit of good in general terms than sat on the sofa stuffing a kebab in his maw.
