Thoughts please (Cervelo)
Discussion
Been thinking of getting back into road bikes for some time now. Think I'm finally going to push the button.
I was going to jump straight back into 4k of bike... Pulled in by carbon, aero and di2 etc
Bit of a rethink though... Money is available but there's also lots of other things needing a budget coming up which makes me think 4k is probably a bit much for now.
So had a thought about what I really need getting back into things and have found 2017 Cervelo R2 Ultegra (well Ultegra/105 mix is probably best description) for £1,666.
Edited... For same costs roughly, 2017 Cannondale Super6 Evo Ultegra is also a consideration.
They both seem like a good solid base to then put upgrades on as time goes by. I know there are still cheaper ways back into it, but this seems a good compromise.
Any experience on Cervelo R2 out there? Seems okay in reviews I can find.

I didn't "get on" with the R2 when I test rode one (more than once).
My heart had been set on it, but I found it didn't "feel right" for me and was a little twitchy at the front end. Nothing wrong with the bike, just that me and it didn't get on particularly well. I ended up spending more (considerably more) on a Trek Emonda which was the complete opposite. A bike I was pretty "meh!" about before I rode it, but which just felt incredibly "right" once I was on it.
I'm not trying to put you off the Cervelo, as your experience will be different to mine, but do try to get a test ride on one before splashing the cash...

Love my R2. As YJ says they are quite direct in input, but I like that.
Rs010 wheels on mine were pants, but then what do you expect for a pair of wheels that cost £80 - not slow wheels particularly, just very prone to pothole damage. I'm in the process of rebuilding the rear into a turbo trainer spare. Front seems fine though
BB was made of cheese too, but easily sorted

If you don't go for it / or know they have more than one, could you let me know where the offer was from? I liked the R2, but was originally out of my budget, but seeing as i've been distracted by houseworks and not actually bought a new bike yet... at that price it'd be nicely in budget.
Nearly finalised going ahead with this..
I'll only get £1,666 price because VAT will be taken off with it being sent to Jersey.
In the crazy situation that it is going to be cheaper to fly to England for decent bike fit and ordering than it will be to order it locally. Lazy, greedy, uninterested local shops.
Already have plans to swap out BB for better unit which will then allow fitting shimano ultegra crank and I'll swap 105 cassette and chain to give full ultegra. Probably never know the difference, but it will make me happy.
Next year the wheels will then get upgraded...

Finally went ahead.....
Trip to London (Swift Cycles, who have been very good).
Had a comprehensive Retul bike fit which helps build my confidence the bike will feel right.
Went for the Cervelo R2 Ultegra.. first time I'd seen the colour scheme in in person and love the look of it.
Made a couple of mods to get it how I wanted (bottom bracket changed out for something more reliable and now takes shimano crank, fsa crank swapped to Ultegra, rear cassette and chain now Ultegra). Bike now on full Ultegra group set.
I think I've found a good bike to build up from at the price I got it. Can't wait to get out on a road bike again.
Pic from the fit..

t. Buy whatever fits, you like the looks of best, and what is available. And then get on with riding the damn thing.
