Garmin Edge 1000 maps....

HI,

On the Garmin Edge 1000, after its latest update, when you go to choose the maps there are several:

ITNL Standard Basemap, NO
Garmin Cycle Map EU 2017.10
Edge DEM map EU 2014.10
Garmin Geocode Map EU 2016.10
Edge DEM map EU 2014.20
Garmin Geocode Map EU 2017.10

Now.....To save more space is it not possible to delete the "Geocode 2016.10" and the Edge DEM Map EU 2014.10"?

In the list of files on the device it's not exactly clear what is what, though!

Mine (800) only uses one set of maps at a time, so I only have one set on. They're a bit out of date, but I don't use that functionality often.

I'd say you'd be fine to dump the ones you mention, and possibly others too.

Out of interest does anyone know if the standard Edge 820 comes with European Maps installed or is it just the UK?

Yes, they do come with European maps.

Well I wanted to move the maps from the internal storage to the SD card but, for some reason, garmin express won't let me do it. So I deleted the map files and went to re-download them from garmin express and it said it all went fine....but it gave me no choice to save to the SD card, then it said I had something like 400MB free and I may want to consider getting an SD card!! The unit was reading the card fine (routes etc saved on there) so I copied the files from the device onto my computer (for back up) and onto the SD card in the Garmin folder, deleted them from the internal storage and hey presto....my device has over 7GB of free storage

Only reason for doing this was for future map updates....if it automatically wants to save to the internal storage (I swear it used to give me an option to save to the SD card!!!) then it wouldn't have capacity to do so. Now it has over 7GB so hopefully it shouldn't be an issue. Even if an update comes in at 6GB I can save it to the device, then move to SD card and free up the space again.

I've got a 32GB card, for reference.

Having said that, when I turn the unit on, it says "cannot unlock map"....I click the tick at the bottom of the screen, but when viewing it, the map appears absolutely fine I'll test it out with navigating tomorrow but on a cursory look it loads courses fine and offers directions etc.... weird.

For anyone taking interest....

This morning I plugged it into my PC and went to reinstall the maps, there was no option to save to the SD card however. Annoyingly, near the end, I moved the laptop and the cable came out....cue a failed installation after over an hours wait! The garmin wouldn't turn on (cue a twitchy bum)....it kept going to the loading screen, then saying loading maps....then it just immediately switched off. The same happened when I plugged it into my laptop.....oh dear.

I removed the SD card and he presto, it turned on...but it said couldn't validate maps. Plugged it back into laptop, deleted the map files, reinserted the SD card and....it works absolutely fine. Oddly, I am no longer getting the previous error about not being able to unlock the maps.

So as it stands the Edge 1000 has over 7GB of free internal storage. The only issue is that if there is a map update....it'll try to store it to the internal device.

Why can I not choose to save the maps to the SD card? Has anyone got any ideas? It's clearly reading the SD card absolutely fine....because it loaded my route this morning, and gave navigation instructions etc without any issues!
