Road wheels for fat bloke

Hi. I keep breaking spokes on my giant sr2 rear wheel. I'm getting a bit fed up with it now. Can you recommend a set of replacement wheels? Bike is giant Defy 3 with 9 speed sora. Don't want to spend a fortune. Promised myself a new bike if I can shift a bit of weight. Cheers.

Depends on how how heavy you are? 36h front and rear, something along these lines unless your over 150kg with bike/kit.

I got my local bike shop - who specialise in wheel builds - to build me some wheels. They were a lot cheaper than I expected to pay and were bullet proof. I think they were Mavic rims on shimano hubs and I never had an issue.

I used Wills Wheels in Manchester, doesnt look like you are too far away so might be worth a trip.

I got a pair of fulcrum racing 5 wheels last year, whilst they have not done many miles they are still nice and straight with my hefty self on board.
I posted on here asking a similar question and they were recommended by a few people iirc.

I also fitted 28mm tyres at the same time and they improved the ride a huge amount, and my hope was they would be better to cushion the wheels from damage too.

I've always found Shimano wheels to be up to the job of carrying my larger than average frame.

Not so the sh** Maddox RS 3.0s which came with my bike.

I'm sure the rim and hub are fine. Just change out the spokes and make sure they're tensioned correctly and not twisted. If you're anywhere near Northampton I'll do it for you.

Otherwise I've got a new Mavic Open Sport 36h on the shelf (£10?) which I could build up onto a decent hub (Shimano 105 ~£45, Ultegra ~£55) with DT 14/15 spokes (~£32) call it £100 +P&P

Handbuilt is the way to go for the, ahem, ´bigger´ rider.

I had the same on my old CAAD because I was too powerful (ly built) for the Shimano RS10 wheels which I stupidly fitted.

Replaced with Open Sports on Tiagra hubs and never broke a spoke again. Great all-weather wheels. Not exactly the lightest mind!

I use quite a random selection of Mavic / Shimano wheels for rough and tough duties where I'm not 110% aero/weight focused and as such if I look in the back yard at my lads "pub" bikes I can see that one has a CXP-Claris on the front and the other has an Open Sport-Tiagra on the back. Both bulletproof!

I just checked in the garage I do have another OpenSport 36h eyletted rim. Proper old school nuclear bunker wheel material.
