SO if the Police don't know the laws of the road, how do you expect motorists to?

On a side note (I wish I had a rear dash cam) I overtook a cyclist the other day, leaving a full lane. A police car did the same behind me, barely crossing the middle line, then flashed at me and pointed some kind of arrow hand gesture at me, basically like I was too far over.

So again if the Police disagree, what is the actual law and how can you blame motorists for all cycle overtaking problems if the Police don't do it properly?

OR maybe the do it properly and cyclists are spreading false "rules"...

Leave enough space so that if they fall off you don't run over their head. It's that simple.

One of those pictures is the Police, the other is the Highway Code - which one is 'cyclists spreading false 'rules''?

It looks to me like the distance between the car and the cyclist in both cases is around 1.5m - which seems reasonable. Why do you find the safe overtaking of slower road users such a challenge?

That particular rule in the Highway Code is absurd though, as demonstrated by the top photo.

When overtaking another car on a single carriageway road, by definition, you can't give it more than a couple of feet clearance, as to give it more than that, you'd have to be up on the kerb. I certainly wouldn't want to be overtaken that closely when I'm cycling though.

'Give vulnerable users at least as much space as a car' is not the same as 'leave a car's width between you and vulnerable users'.

Both pictures illustrate giving a cyclist some room when overtaking. No contradiction.

You think there's a cars width in those pictures from the highway code? Blindspot is right, your reading of the highway code is what's wrong, not the police.

Almost yes.

Look at the top picture. That car is about 2 feet from the opposite verge. The cyclist is in the left of their lane. Most cyclists ride in the middle of the lane, so to keep that gap you would have to mount the grass verge whilst overtaking.

Not possible is it?

There are 8 grid squares in the length of the car, and around 7.2 grid squares in the gap between the car and the cycle.

The guidance could not be more clear. The pictures are not there to be copied to the millimeter. They are an illustration. The police are not giving an inconsistent message, you are for some reason trying to drum up a grievance against them.

This internet forum thing must be taking a lot out of you both emotionally and physically?!

Genuinely, find something constructive to do with your time. Read books, take up origami, ride bikes (you might like it...) or go to the gym. Learn to dance, learn to paint, volunteer at a charity or local youth organisation. There are so many worth while things you could do with your time that doesn't involve trolling the internet! This really isn't the future!

Honestly, I'm not being weird or anything like that. You seem quite angry and this probably isn't helping - I am literally going to post this and then turn off my laptop to do some reading before bed!
