MTB Wheelset

I'm looking for a new MTB wheelset, 26" wheels, standard 9mm QR and 6 blot disks.

I don't want to spend a lot really, what would people recommend for £100-£150?

Edd, I bought some Mavic Crossones in the summer for that sort of money. Nothing remarkable, but 26" and QR. from Rose

In hindsight I wish I'd bought something in the £300 range, if only to get a proper step up from my old wheels.

If they're the kind of thing you'd be after I'm sure we could come to an arrangement...

But I just had a quick look at fresh classifieds around and assuming you're not a big hitting heavy downhiller, this looks like a good deal. Centrelok but includes disks and you can get adaptors for 6-bolt ones easily enough too. I like Shimano hubs. Easy to service, XT are sealed well and XT skewers are simply the best around. Pair of good tyres chucked in too, easy tubeless.

Heavier hub weight (200g over a pair of Hope Pro2) is offset by lightweight spokes (Revs) and rims (300g under a pair of Flows), hence suitable for probs sub 85kg XC rider.

A friend has a set and they're really nice wheels without having to pay for branding etc. Great hubs and rims are nice and wide for running low pressures.

It's hard to argue as it's what I'd do. You'll get in the same trouble with Mrs H (to be) either way, so you may as well get a properly decent pair.

I had a set of Fulcrum Reds, I paid £200 for them and were cracking wheels and great value for money. They took a proper beating and remained true.

IMO i'd avoid shimano xt...
I love (most things) shimano, but the free-hub, and axle on my xt 29er wheels is made of chocolate!!

I would only buy Shimano or Hope hubs conventionally spoked due to spares availability and proven reliability.

Good luck getting a reasonably priced free hub or a single spoke or other parts for the myriad of other brands in a couple of years time.

At least with Shimano you can usually pick up a whole spare hub cheaper than just a freehub, and Hope carry loads of spares.
